FBI Joins Shooting Investigation After Bullet Hits White House Window

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Secret Service has brought in the FBI for an investigation into a shooting that occurred near the White House Friday, as law enforcement discover multiple bullets at the scene and the primary suspect remains on the loose.

According to a Secret Service statement Wednesday, law enforcement found a bullet that smashed a window at the White House before being stopped by a second layer of "ballistic glass." Another round was found outside the White House. The Secret Service said the damage "has not been conclusively connected" to the shooting.

Shown here is Oscar Ortega, whom police suspect of being involved in a shooting near the White House.

"An assessment of the exterior of the White House is ongoing," the Secret Service said.

Fox News has learned that the FBI joined the investigation on Tuesday at the request of the Secret Service and U.S. Park Police. The FBI has extensive expertise in evidence gathering, which could explain why the agency was called in to assist.

Law enforcement continue to search for the suspect, 21-year-old Oscar Ortega-Hernandez. The suspect has a record of arrests in Idaho, Utah and Texas, according to MyFoxDC, and reportedly is believed to be mentally ill.

Park Police originally obtained an arrest warrant for Ortega-Hernandez after discovering an AK-47-style rifle in an abandoned car Friday night. The car was found after Secret Service officers heard shots being fired between two vehicles about a half-mile from the White House.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said Sunday that officers had obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect on a felony charge of carrying a dangerous weapon, in connection with the incident.

Ortega-Hernandez is thought to have remained in the Washington, D.C., area following Friday's drama. Secret Service describe him as a 21-year old, Hispanic male, 5'11", 160 pounds, with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were in California at the time of the shooting, before traveling to Hawaii for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

News of the bullets' discovery broke shortly after the president landed in Australia for a brief 27-hour visit.

The AK-47 could have been one of the weapons that Obama/Holder/ATF let walk in the "Fast & Furious" scandal! Could it be a case of blind justice?!

WASHINGTON - U.S. Park Police continue to search for a 21-year-old man suspected of firing shots near the White House.

Sgt. David Schlosser, a park police spokesman, says it's not clear what the motivation was for the gunfire. Nothing was hit and no one was injured.

The suspect, Oscar Ramiro Ortega, is charged in a warrant with carrying a dangerous weapon, a felony. Schlosser says Ortega hasn't been linked to any radical organizations, but he does have a record of arrests in three states.

Schlosser says police searched the Occupy D.C. encampment in McPherson Square after callers said they had seen a man matching Ortega's description, but the search turned up empty.

The gunfire was reported Friday night. Ortega was identified as the suspect after police found his abandoned car

Hunt for gunman after AK47 bullet hits White House window

    By Daniel Bates

Last updated at 5:19 PM on 16th November 2011

A manhunt is underway in the U.S. for a disturbed gunman who is suspected of shooting at the White House with an AK-47 assault rifle and smashing a window.

Police said Oscar Ramiro Ortega - who is thought to have a fixation on the building - opened fire across a lawn from half a mile away then ran off.

When the White House was checked a round was found to have gone through a window and was only stopped from going inside by the bulletproof glass behind it.

A second round was found embedded in the exterior of the building.

Barack Obama was not in the White House at the time and was in California en route to the APEC summit in Hawaii.

The Secret Service has not yet been able to definitely link the two incidents but are now hunting Ortega, 21.

They said that he is mentally disturbed and had been in Washington for weeks before opening fire, coming back and forth to Washington Mall.

Agents say he is unpredictable and are extremely worried what he might do next.

They are also unsure if he is capable of launching a more sophisticated attack.

Fortunately the White House has a second layer of bulletproof glass and the bullet didn't make it inside

ABC News is saying Hernandez, 21, is from Idaho, is believed to be mentally ill. Has had run-ins with the law, including for domestic violence and drug charges. Police think he is armed with an assault rifle, and he is considered a danger to Barack Obama.
Check that out folks! The suspect is Hispanic and the media is rushing to make him out to be a mentally ill drug addict criminal.

If he had been a white guy, we most likely would have seen a Department of Homeland Security release to the media by now claiming he was likely motivated by conservative ideology just like they did when Jarod Loughner opened fire on Congresswoman Giffords.

In that case, Loughner ended up being a mentally ill person on drugs instead of ideologically driven.

How many of you want to bet that in this case the shooter is actually ideologically driven, an illegal immigrant, and or using one of the Fast and Furious guns Obama bought for the drug smugglers?

Suspect hunted after bullet strikes White House

21-year-old sought after shots are fired near president's residence
    Below:

    2011-11-16
The U.S. Secret Service is investigating whether a shooting incident in Washington on Friday night was a rash attempt to fire at the White House.

The Secret Service disclosed Wednesday that investigators have recovered two bullet rounds that struck the White House — one a window and the other the building's exterior.

The rounds may have been fired during a shooting on Friday night near the White House, but the two incidents have not been conclusively connected. Police are intensifying their search for a suspect in the first incident.

Initial police reports said the Friday shooting at around 9 p.m. involved two cars speeding along Constitution Avenue, the wide street south of the White House and the Ellipse. The shots were believed to have been fired from a moving car as it passed along the 1600 block, a little over a third of a mile from the White House, in an area between the White House and the Washington Monument.

Law enforcement personnel investigate near the site where a bullet hit an exterior window on the south side of the White House on Wednesday. The bullets are believed to have been fired last Friday after witnesses heard gunshots and saw two vehicles speeding away from the area. No one was hurt. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were out of town on Friday night. The president was attending a basketball game in San Diego, before heading to Hawaii, where he hosted a weekend APEC summit of Asia-Pacific regional leaders.

..The car from which U.S. Park Service police believe the shots were fired was found about seven blocks away, crashed into a barrier, with an assault-type rifle still inside. About 10 shell casings were also found in the car, indicating that the shots were fired from inside the vehicle, NBC News reported.

The car has been traced to Oscar Ramiro Ortega, 21, who has connections to Idaho, Utah, and Texas, authorities said. He is also known by the name Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, according to the Secret Service.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, on a charge of carrying a dangerous weapon. It's illegal to possess or discharge a firearm in the District of Columbia.

    Ortega remains at large.

..Now, investigators are looking into whether he was shooting at the White House, and they're now working to determine whether the two rounds found Tuesday came from the weapon that was in his car.

"Damage to an exterior window was discovered at the White House. A round was stopped by ballistic glass behind the historic exterior glass. One additional round has been found on the exterior of the White House," Secret Service officials said.

Nearly all the windows in the White House have bullet-resistant glass behind the original historic windows, and it is a robust building.

Story: Police probe gunfire reported near White House

"Specifically what he was aiming at, or not aiming at, is something that would be better addressed by interviewing him," U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said, according to The Washington Post. "Otherwise, it's just speculation."

Ortega has a criminal record including arrests for domestic violence, drug offenses, assault on a police officer and underage alcohol possession, the Post reported.

Law enforcement has searched for him in the Occupy DC camp at McPherson Square, NBC Washington reported. Park police believe Ortega came to the D.C. area several weeks ago and may still be in the area, the station reported.

Investigators say Ortega has several distinctive tattoos, including several dots on his right hand. He also has the word "Israel" tattooed on the left side of his neck. U.S. Park Police say he also has several other tattoos on his chest and back including the name "Ortega," hands clasped in prayer and rosary beads.

ABC News reported that police believe the suspect is mentally ill. Sources told ABC that investigators have uncovered evidence suggesting he has a fixation on the White House.

White House shooting suspect may be threat

    The Australian

AUTHORITIES are concerned that the man being sought in connection to a shooting incident near the White House is a threat to the safety of President Barack Obama, ABC News reported Wednesday.

Police are currently searching for 21-year-old Oscar Ortega-Hernandez for his role in an incident that occurred about a half a mile (800m) from the White House around 9:00pm local time Friday. The Secret Service on Tuesday also discovered two bullets on White House grounds, one of which smashed a window but was stopped by special anti-ballistic glass that shields the building's interior.

The Secret Service said it has not been able to "conclusively" connect the two incidents, but ABC News reported that authorities believe the bullets found at the White House were likely from the shots fired Friday.

Police believe Ortega-Hernandez may be mentally ill and may have a particular fixation on the White House. The suspect has a long criminal history, having previously been charged with domestic violence and drug offenses.

The FBI joined the investigation of the bullets found at the White House Tuesday at the request of the Secret Service and the US Park Police.

Authorities first began searching for Ortega-Hernandez after they discovered an AK-47-style rifle in an abandoned car shortly after Secret Service officers heard shots being fired between two vehicles on Constitution Avenue, located about half a mile from the White House, on Friday night.

Law enforcement officials said evidence in the car suggested Ortega-Hernandez was the shooter.

US Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said Sunday officers had obtained an arrest warrant for Ortega-Hernandez on a felony charge of carrying a dangerous weapon in connection with Friday's shooting.

Authorities had previously listed his name as Oscar Ramiro Ortega.

ABC News reported that the 21-year-old has visited the Washington Mall several times in recent weeks and that he may have spent time with the Occupy D.C. protesters. Ortega-Hernandez was also recently detained briefly by police at an abandoned house.

The Secret Service described Ortega-Hernandez as a Hispanic male standing five-foot-11 and weighing 160 pounds with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair. Photos show that he has shoulder-length hair and a thick beard.

He is believed to have ties to Idaho and is thought to have remained in the Washington, D.C., area following Friday's drama.

Obama and his wife Michelle were in California at the time of the shooting Friday before traveling to Hawaii for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. News of the bullets' discovery broke shortly after the president landed in Australia for a brief 27-hour visit.

WASHINGTON – The suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred near the White House has been arrested in Pennsylvania, officials confirm.

The U.S. Secret Service said in a brief statement that Oscar Ortega-Hernandez was found by a Pennsylvania state trooper at a hotel near Indiana, Pa., shortly after noon on Wednesday. He is currently being held by the State Police.

The arrest comes as officials continue to investigate the incident, after discovering bullets at or near the White House.

According to a Secret Service statement earlier Wednesday, law enforcement found one bullet that smashed a window at the White House before being stopped by a second layer of "ballistic glass." Another round was found outside the White House. The Secret Service said the damage "has not been conclusively connected" to the shooting.
