TEL AVIV (Sputnik) – More than 45 Israeli police officers have been injured in clashes with members of the Ethiopian community, who are blocking the country's main highways over the death of an Ethiopian boy, who was shot by a policeman, police said in a statement.

The mass protests on Tuesday resulted in heavy traffic jams across the country. The protesters also burned tires and threw stones at police officers, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
"The protests transformed into violent and uncontrolled riots … A total of 47 police officers have been injured, 60 protesters have been detained", the statement said on late Tuesday.
The riots hit the cities of Haifa, Hadera, Petah Tikva, Ashdod, Netivot, Kiryat Malakhi, and Jerusalem.
Protests by the Ethiopian community erupted in Israel after the death of Solomon Tekah, 19, who was shot dead by a police officer in the Kiryat Haim neighbourhood of Haifa on Sunday. The officer says he was attacked by Tekah while trying to stop a scuffle between several young people.
An eyewitness refutes the officer's remarks, saying that the latter was not in danger. The officer was arrested following the incident but soon released to house arrest, which sparked the subsequent protests.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the Ethiopian protesters to respect the law and refrain from blocking highways. He also expressed condolences to the family of Tekah.
About 130,000 Ethiopians live in Israel, a country of some 8.7 million people. Members of Israel's Ethiopian community often complain of discrimination and excessive police violence.

Some 47 police officers were injured and 60 people arrested after a spate of protests across Israel over the shooting dead of 18-year-old Ethiopian-descendant Solomon Teka.
Protesters erected burning barricades and clashed with police in the northern city of Haifa on Monday and Tuesday following Teka’s death in Kiryat Haim late on Sunday.

Crowds of Ethiopian Israelis blocked junctions across the country after an off-duty police officer reportedly shot the teenager dead.
The officer involved in Sunday’s shooting says he feared for his life as a group of youths, allegedly including Teka, pelted him with stones after he tried to intervene in a fight. The cop has been placed under house arrest and an investigation into the shooting is underway.


“It’s not ‘killing’, it’s murder,” Teka’s cousin, Amir, said in a radio interview on Tuesday, as cited by Al Jazeera. “It cannot be that a person is next to his home and gets murdered and they say ‘killed.’ What was it? A work accident? Was he hit by a car?”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a video response to the violent clashes late on Tuesday, saying that“everyone was mourning the tragic death of Solomon Teka,” while beseeching the crowds not to escalate further. “I ask you, let’s solve the problems together while adhering to the law.”

The Ethiopian Jewish community numbers around 140,000, including more than 50,000 expats. They have complained of systemic harassment and racism since forming in Israel in the 1980s and 1990s after an in an influx of Jews from elsewhere in the world.

The protests erupted over the killing of a teenager of Ethiopian origin in Haifa by an off-duty policeman on Sunday. The protests, which swiftly turned violent, were held at major interchanges and roads across the country on Tuesday evening, after the funeral for 19-year-old Solomon Tekah.

He said dozens of others joined in on the attack, jumping on the vehicle and hurling rocks at the windshield. “They completely destroyed the car,” he said.

The driver said he had two options, either to continue driving and possibly run over some protesters or “get out of the car and be lynched.”

He said he decided to remain in the vehicle and wait until security forces rescued him.

"Four undercover policemen emerged from the crowd and saved me,” he said. “As we were fleeing, the protesters pelted us with rocks and bottles and sprayed us with pepper spray.”

I can't understand why these Israeli's wouldn't want to REUNITE FAMILIES????? I hope it isn't because they're BIGOTS????? This story says it's because of $$$$$ but AIPAC can always have our Congress send the Israeli's MORE $$$$$ and I'm sure Congress would go along with the extra funding in this case because they'd be REUNITING FAMILIES. I always hear HOW IMPORTANT that is to REUNITE FAMILIES from our politicians and espiecally from the Jewish members of Congress who always make that a priority in this nation.
