Panama: Rescuers want U.S. work visas, not money as reward

Panama: Rescuers want U.S. work visas, not money as reward
    December 30, 2007

    PANAMA

Two brothers who helped rescue a 12-year-old California girl after the plane she was in crashed in Panama said they're hoping for a U.S. work visa as a reward, not money.

Manuel and Miguel Angel Vurac were part of a group of volunteers who on Tuesday found 12-year-old Francesca Lewis, the sole survivor of the crash in Panama's remote western mountains. They also found the bodies of Francesca's friend Talia Klein, 13; Klein's father, Michael Klein, 37, a prominent businessman from Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Panamanian pilot Edwin Lasso, 23.

Kim Klein, Michael's Klein ex-wife and Talia's mother, offered a $25,000 reward to anyone who located the aircraft. Klein said the men still would receive the monetary reward.

I still have a very bad taste in my mouth about Panama. I went through JOTC jungle training there in the mid 80's and all I heard was Yankee go home when I went to town on my one day break after being in the jungle for more than 3 weeks.

I did my Jugle Warfare Operations there as well.... We had to stay on base because of rioting outside Fort Sherman in 1982

    Airborne Bro!

That sucks, at least I had a chance to see the Gatun Locks. Colón is a 3rd world cesspool so you didn't miss much.

What that means obviously is that they think that they can make more working here than a mere $25,000.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

    LOL!
    Flash back memory/ nightmare.
Our hard core CO made us run that stupid obstacle course every morning while we were in the Fort Sherman barracks. I have to say that watching the sun set at Fort Sherman was absolutely beautiful, kind of reminds me of the Corona Christmas commercials. I detest Corona beer but I loved the Gorilla burgers at Ft. Sherman.

    Ummm, how about HELL NO?!?!

I can just see kidnapping of US citizens escalate if we give these "volunteers" work visas.

Same.. I had an Airborne Ranger CO ... We ran it as well until we started Jungle Opns..... I was a Combat Engineer, just out of Air Assault School and our entire brigade went on RDF 1 and deployed to Panama.... all 3 brigades went through JOTC at Sherman and it turned out to be a prep for Grenada ... almost 9 months later. We did a lot of Helo Operations and LZ / DZ preparations so we got out of some of the crazy stuff, but had a blast.. we did get 1 day on Devils beach getting drunk, riding air matraces and getting sun poison from passing out on the beach .. your right about the sun sets, man they were gorgeous
