The Governor must enforce the laws of the state. According to some estimates, there are almost 300,000 illegal immigrants living in North Carolina, and they are a burden to our economy, education system, and healthcare system. It’s not fair that the honest, hard-working, tax-paying citizens of North Carolina are footing the bill.

In order to prevent North Carolina’s systems from being undermined, and more importantly, to enforce our nation’s laws, illegal immigration must be dealt with. As Governor, I will focus on illegal immigration in the following ways:

* Give law enforcement the tools they need.
We must implement the 287(g) program across the State. This will allow our local law enforcement to detain, identify, and prepare illegal immigrants, who broke laws, for deportation. The federal government must provide the State with the authority to tackle this real and growing crisis. Along with this authority, our law enforcement needs the resources to deal with illegal immigration; this includes a detention center and immigration court right here in North Carolina.

* Companies employing illegal immigrants will not receive state contracts.
Just like everyone in the state, state contractors will be expected to follow the law. If they are found to be breaking the law by employing illegal immigrants, they will no longer be eligible for future contracts. There are too many hard-working North Carolinians for our state to be padding the pockets of illegal immigrants.

* Eliminate state benefits to illegal immigrants.
The cost of illegal immigration on our state is too high. We spend millions every year providing services to people who should not receive them. As Governor, I will make sure that illegal immigrants do not receive state benefits, such as driver’s licenses and in-state tuition.
