Paying for Gas With Cash? You May Need to Swipe Your Drivers License

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 6:35am by Liz Klimas Liz Klimas

To help cut down on “pump and runs” — when drivers peel off from a gas station without paying — you may start needing to swipe your drivers license. One gas station in Michigan is already testing out the technology.

The local ABC affiliate in Saginaw, Mich., reports that the owner of a Marathon gas station who had Post-Pay installed — technology that stores information from drivers licenses — has only had one pump and run in the last two months. This is down from three or four each week.

Watch the local news report for more:

ABC reports Bob Hohn, president of Paxson Oil Company and inventor of Post-Pay, as saying information from drivers licenses are maintained temporarily on a device in the store but not kept for the long-term. He said the cashier doesn’t see the information, unless you drive away without paying.

For the one pump and run that has occurred since the technology was installed, police showed up at the person’s home, proving the system works.

Pay first, then pump the gas. Sheesh! I still miss FULL SERVICE! Lordy, that's been a LONG time ago!
