Something very unusual has just happened here, on this humble little page of HTML code.

Just last week I was marveling at how swiftly the negative reviews had piled up justly excoriating Pelosi's thin and self-serving little inspirational piece. More than 240 reviews, predominantly negative, from a variety of expressed political perspectives, had accumulated in less than 48 hours from publication.

As a frequent visitor to Amazon and a connoisseur of how literary opinion is formed, never had I witnessed such an outpouring of scorn. It was remarkable, funny, and even somewhat inspiring.

Now -- POOF -- almost all of those reviews are gone. Vanished. Deleted.

I wonder if all authors have this prerogative, or if perhaps being Speaker of the House of the U.S. House of Representatives carries with it a certain *influence* over the tenders of major booksellers in this country.

I wonder if that assistant professor from Utah State with the new book about the civil rights movement, or that novelist from Santa Fe with the cozy mystery published by a small press, could have the same courtesies extended to them, could deploy minions to turn the levers of power and silence critics and enable the fiction that they really are popular, and doggone it, people like them... Yes, the power of political office is mightier than both the sword AND the pen.

I'm just asking, and of course I expect this review to be removed in due course as well.

The overwhelming majority of those reviews were specifically relevant to the book, regardless of any political references they may have also contained . I had a review deleted with over 400 responses and an 86% Helpful rating (second on the Helpfulness roster).

This is a clear issue of censorship and a violation of the trust consumers place in Amazon. So yes, Chuck, it IS Big Brother.
