Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has just declared that questions about President Joe Biden's mental state are legitimate, just days after chalking his dismal debate performance to a bad night.On June 30, the congresswoman for the Golden State told CNN anchor Dana Bash that Biden "has the stamina" to carry on in the presidential race. She repeatedly asserted that the Democratic incumbent is cognitively sharp and his rival, former President Donald Trump, is suffering from dementia.
The two presidential candidates squared off on June 27 in a debate sponsored by CNN. But the debate, which was moderated by Bash and her colleague Jake Tapper, only showed that Biden is no longer fit to run as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.
Pelosi appeared to be singing a different tune days after appearing on CNN. During a July 2 appearance on MSNBC, the former House speaker remarked: "I think it's a legitimate question to say, 'Is this an episode or is this a condition?' When people ask that question, it's completely legitimate."
"It's not a question of not having an opportunity to make our concerns known or have some questions answered," Pelosi continued. She told MSNBC that she had not spoken with Biden since the June 27 debate, but has been in touch with those close to him. According to the lawmaker, she has been hearing "mixed" opinions about whether Biden is up for the campaign ahead of Election Day in November.
Pelosi continued that it would be "essential" for the 81-year-old chief executive to do "not one, maybe two" unscripted interviews with journalists. "That would be a great thing for him," she added, as it would allow Biden to demonstrate his capabilities without a teleprompter. Following the MSNBC interview, a spokesperson for Pelosi added that the erstwhile House speaker "has full confidence in Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration."
Commentators believe Pelosi got "the call"

According to commentators who took to social media, Pelosi reportedly received the call from the Democratic Party's higher-ups to drop Biden. This, they believe, is what led to the former House speaker doing a 180 on her stance concerning the incumbent president.
User @JoyFlick1 posted on X, writing: "What a difference a day makes. [Just days ago, Pelosi] was 100 percent behind [Biden] – singing his praises and attesting to his physical and mental competency. Who got to her?"
But according to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the order to drop Biden came from the most unlikely source – former President Barack Obama. He wrote on X: "In private, Obama is telling people Biden can't win – and he is therefore in favor of an open convention. Obama will not say whom he supports."
"Relations between the Obamas and the Bidens have never been warm; at times they've been hostile. But recently they've deteriorated further, mostly due to [First Lady] Jill Biden. In the hours and days after the debate, she kept her husband cloistered away from anyone who might convince him to drop out."
According to Carlson, the First Lady serves as "the driving force behind her husband's reelection campaign, just as she was in 2020." She exhorted him to challenge Trump for the presidency, even as other members of the Biden family considered the now 81-year-old too impaired to run.
The founder of the Tucker Carlson Network ultimately remarked in a separate post: "Biden is done, bet on it. Too many prominent Democrats have suggested he's brain-damaged. They can't walk that back. They have to remove him, and they will – the only question is when."
