Pelosi: Two tracks on healthcare reform
Published: Jan. 27, 2010 at 5:58 PM
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says it may be possible to separate healthcare reform into two tracks, with easier-to-pass elements tackled first.
Pelosi told the Washington publication Politico that under the proposal, more contentious long-term healthcare fixes could come later.
"We believe that it's possible to have comprehensive healthcare reform as we go forward, but at the same time, IT CAN BE ON ANOTHER TRACK WHERE SOME THINGS CAN JUST BE PASSED OUTSIDE OF THAT LEGISLATION, and we'll be doing both," Pelosi told the publication.
She reportedly insisted, however, that the move is not a response to the Democrats' loss of the U.S. Senate seat once held by the late Edward Kennedy to Republican Scott Brown, which has complicated the party leadership's efforts to pass healthcare reforms by eliminating their 60-seat, filibuster-proof majority.
Rather, she told Politico, the comprehensive reforms are still on the table.
"We have to get it done," she said. "What the process is doesn't matter. The outcome is what is important, and what it means to working families in America."
