    The mother of an 11-year-old girl who arrived in New York from Mexico last month used a mop handle to beat her on Thursday — a thrashing so severe it left the girl listless, vomiting and confined to bed, the police said. Sometime between then and Sunday morning, they said, the girl died.

    After hours of being questioned on Sunday, the mother, Florencia Vasquez, 36, confessed to the beating, a police official said, and investigators retrieved the mop from her apartment in East New York, Brooklyn, its broken handle held together with tape, the official added.

    Ms. Vasquez told the police that she had beaten her daughter out of hatred for the girl’s father, saying that she “despisedâ€
