    Teens arrested following mall fight

    http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?secti ... id=6289872

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Police were on the scene for several hours at the Triangle Town Center in Raleigh following a huge fight Saturday night.

At approximately 8 p.m. Saturday, four Raleigh Police Department officers were working off duty at Triangle Town Center Mall. They reported a fight in progress at the mall and requested assistance. On-duty RPD units and personnel from the Wake County Sheriff's Office and the N.C. Highway Patrol responded to address the incident.

Witnesses say they heard people screaming and then heard gunshots. However, Raleigh Police say no shots were fired.

The fight, which began inside the mall, continued outside as the crowd began to be disbursed. At its peak, the number of people associated with the disturbance was estimated at between 200 and 300 people. Some of those who were involved are known to be associated with gangs, and the genesis of the incident was gang related.

Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue says when referring to the incident as gang related, "it means that an incident occurred to further the purposes of the gang."

Triangle Town Center Mall security personnel made a decision to close the facility at approximately 8:40 p.m. Order was fully restored about 9 p.m.

A Raleigh Police Department sergeant sustained a significant laceration to one of his knees during the incident. The injury occurred while he was in foot pursuit of a suspect, not as a result of an assault. He was transported to Duke Raleigh Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

A 15-year-old male was stabbed in the buttocks during one of the altercations that occurred outside the mall. He was transported to Wake Med. His wounds are not life threatening.

Seven people were taken into custody as a result of the incident. Six of them were arrested and charged.

    The six include:

    * Javonnie Nicholson, 16, is charged with inciting a riot, assault on law enforcement officer (not related to the knee laceration sustained by the RPD sergeant) and second degree trespassing.

    * Ricky Ladd Williams, 16, is charged with inciting a riot and engaging in an affray.

    * Laquavis Oneal Jordan, 16, is charged with inciting a riot.

    * Darryl Anthony Bobbitt, 18, is charged with inciting a riot, resist/obstruct or delay a public officer and second degree trespassing.

    * Christopher James Gamble, 17, is charged with inciting a riot and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury (the stabbing that occurred outside the mall).

    * Tyrell Eugene Brantley, 18, is charged with inciting a riot and disorderly conduct.

In addition to those charged, a juvenile petition will be secured for a 15-year-old juvenile detained in connection with the incident.

Nicholson and Jordan have bonded out. They will be in court at 9 a.m. Others will be in court at 2 p.m.

One witness says people were running to their store looking to hide from the chaos.

Shoppers outside of the mall say they are concerned about the confrontation.

"When they start shooting, they can shoot at us, anybody in the mall, anyone innocent walking by, a bullet could hit them. Not even safe to come shopping," shopper Gay Akemon said.

Jones declined to say if the mall had security camera footage of the incident. Sughrue said authorities are still investigating.

Several mall employees say the incident highlights a huge problem of loitering --saying security officers do not enforce the anti-loitering policy.

Mall management says there is an anti-loitering police, but there is loitering at any mall. They say they have kicked groups out before. Their rules state no groups can congregate at the mall.

The mall held a meeting for employees at the food court Sunday at 9 a.m. to talk about the incident.

Jennifer Jones, the mall's marketing director, said the mall will operate during normal hours Sunday and that officials there are working to identify ways to prevent such an incident from happening again.

"Our main concern is the safety of our shoppers and our retailers," Jones said.

Oddly enough, there was a brawl at the HAZLETON mall this past weekend involving 50-70 fighters that fell outside into the parking lot. 2 security guards were assaulted in the process.

I am working on the details for a new papundits.com story, waiting for the mall manager to call me back.

We don't know if this one was caused by gangbangers, but the paper says it was a couple of drunk teenagers (whose names were conveniently NOT released).

I wonder if this is a concerted effort since both were mall fights on the same weekend, possibly the same day (our cops won't even say what day it happened).

"A 15-year-old boy from Sugarloaf Township was apprehended Friday night at Kmart in the Laurel Mall by the store’s loss prevention officers. The boy was stopped for shoplifting a pack of gum and deodorant. Charges will be filed with District Judge Daniel O’Donnell’s office by Sugarloaf Township police.

Sugarloaf Township police are investigating the theft of a large amount of gold jewelry taken from the Earring Pagoda Friday night at the Laurel Mall. Police are looking for anyone who may have information about the theft. Call 788-5339 for Officer Diane Fisher or Luzerne County 911 with information.

Sugarloaf police continue to investigate at least three fights started by two drunk juvenile males. At one point, as many as 50 to 70 juveniles were fighting inside the Laurel Mall, outside in the parking lot and surrounding areas of the mall. Two security guards were assaulted. Police did not indicate when the fights occurred.

Two males, ages 14 and 16 of Hazleton and West Hazleton were taken into custody and will be petitioned to Luzerne County Court for their actions, police said. Police from West Hazleton, Conyngham, Penn State, Schuylkill County and Pennsylvania State Police assisted. Parents are urged to accompany their children while at the mall, especially on Friday nights, police said."

I believe these kids might be Americans; but gang warfare between Hispanics and Black seems to be possible, here. Goggled Darryl Anthony Bobbitt and news came up on him.

This is a problem that the MALL has allowed to happen.....mall management needs to institute their own rules (like many others have) regarding curfews and unaccompanied minors as well as hire better trained, REAL security guards and off-duty police to provide for the safety and security of the shoppers and emloyees of the malls. These thugs have been allowed to use this mall by the management.....and that's a shame. You would think that the retailers would be pressuring mall management more ....why would they allow conditions to exist that scare away paying shoppers and attract thugs that are there to intimidate, use drugs, and commit petty crime?

Malls arent good places to shop anymore. Too many teens hang around and commit crimes. One mall I used to shop at was completely taken over by thugs. It got so bad that the public bathrooms and movie theatres were torn down. Most of the nicer stores moved to different locations. Now a bunch of Dollar stores fill up the inside.

There doesn't seem to be any evidence to suggest that any illegal aliens or immigrants were involved.

No, when I initially read the article I was highly suspicious of the veague nature of the piece. Since others have been published, I realize this was not the case. I went to school about two hours outside of Raleigh in the 80's. I can't recall anything like this ever happenening.
