Police: 6 killed, 32 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Six men were killed and at least 32 other people were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Sunday night, according to Chicago Police.

The weekend’s latest homicide happened shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Officers responding to a call of shots fired found a man on the ground in the 2800 block of South Pulaski with gunshot wounds to the head and torso. The man, thought to be between 20 and 30, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:28 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His name has not yet been released.

About two hours earlier, a 23-year-old man was shot to death in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. Officers responding about 3:05 a.m. to a call of a person shot in the 2400 block of West Lexington found the man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to the back. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 3:45 a.m., authorities said. His name was not released Sunday.

About an hour earlier, a 22-year-old man was gunned down in a separate Lawndale attack. Officers saw shots fired about 2:10 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Christiana, where an Isaiah Hurley was hit in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene at 2:25 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said. Officers spotted several people leaving the scene and arrested them nearby. Charges were pending early Sunday.
At 1:50 a.m., a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side. He walked out the backdoor of his apartment in the 7300 block of North Sheridan and later returned and told his friends that he’d been shot, police said. He was shot in the back and taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he died at 3:30 a.m., authorities said. His name was not released Sunday.
Saturday morning, a man was killed in another Little Village shooting. Giovanni Galvan, 20, was standing on the sidewalk about 10:15 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 24th Street when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him in the chest, abdomen, back and arm, authorities said. Galvan was taken to Mount Sinai, where he died at 10:41 a.m. He lived in the 2200 block of South Trumbull Avenue.
The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. Officers found a 37-year-old man lying in an alley in the 4200 block of West Wilcox with multiple gunshot wounds to the head, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:02 a.m. His name has not been released.
The most recent nonfatal shooting happened at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, when a 16-year-old boy was shot in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, police said. He was outside in the 1500 block of West 81st Street when two males approached and shot him twice in the buttocks. The boy was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.
At least 31 more people were wounded in other shootings across the city between 5:50 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Sunday.
