On January 14, 2013, a young man with Down syndrome went with his companion to see Zero Dark Thirty at the Regal Cinema in Frederick, MD. At the end of the movie, apparently because he wanted to see it again, he refused to get out of his seat. A Regal employee, rather than allowing him to stay and dealing with the situation later with his parents and the companion, called not one, not two, but three off duty Frederick County police officers who were working security for the theater at the time.

According to published reports, when the officers/ security guards asked him to leave, he mouthed off at them and “resisted arrest”. Those of you who know my son Landon can visualize what this would look like. In response, the officers wrestled him to the ground where he asphyxiated in handcuffs. The handcuffs were removed and EMS called and according to the police news release he later died at hospital. I don’t know how that reconciles with the coroner’s finding of asphyxiation which I thought was pretty immediate.

The price of a ticket at the cinema is between $9 and $11. The additional cost to Regal of allowing him to watch the movie again was ZERO. But instead a beloved young man died on the floor of a movie theater in his neighborhood at the hands of people he was taught would protect him.

The police officers remain on duty and were allowed to invoke their rights as police officers not to provide statements even though they were not on duty or performing official duties at the time. They were security guards in police uniforms.

The county police are investigating and the story has received local news coverage. Please share this everywhere both to ensure justice but also to raise public awareness.

Where is our humanity when a young, obviously disabled young man dies for the price of a movie ticket? My son is worth a lot more to me & society than eleven dollars.

Down Syndrome Man’s Larynx Crushed By Sheriffs, Killed for Disobedience

Once again, refusing to submit to our government controllers has deadly consequences. Ethan Saylor, a man with Down syndrome had his larynx crushed during a struggle with three off-duty Frederick County Sheriff deputies who were attempting to arrest him.

What crime had Mr. Saylor committed that resulted in his death at the hands of officers? He had simply refused to vacate his seat at a movie theater once the show had ended. That was the initial offense, but it got more serious after that. The more serious offense then became Mr. Saylor’s disobedience. In Frederick County Maryland, you better do as you are told.

Saylor’s refusal to submit was enough to garner the wrath of our public servants, who don’t look kindly upon someone who tells them no. It seems to have not mattered to the deputies that Mr. Saylor was mentally handicapped, which is obvious from his appearance. The deputies also seem to have determined as irrelevant the warnings of Mr. Saylor’s companion that physical confrontation with Mr. Saylor would likely result in an escalation. Perhaps that was enough of a perceived threat to get him killed.

Maybe this wasn’t a case of a display of machismo gone bad, but it looks like it. Sheriff deputies are supposed to have a variety of physical restraint measures which are non-lethal. If these three off-duty deputies needed backup to subdue this large man, they should have requested it. What’s the rush? He was originally being arrested for not leaving the theater. Were they afraid he was going to change his mind?

Bunch of cop haters out there. The man expected to get something for free and when wasn't allowed was told her had to vacate. He refused and got disorderly and security tried to escort him out. The man proceeded to struggle making it difficult for the security to protect the business which is their job at the time. They further went to arresting the man putting his HANDS in handcuffs. For whatever medical reason the man stopped breathing and died. The officers had no knowledge of the mans medical condition other then possibly knowing he had downs syndrome however unlikely knowing the full range of that mental disease.

The man died from his own actions. The security / off duty police didn't shoot the man, didn't taser the man, they didn't even choke the man. But again another issue where a person cannot be held responsible for their own actions and when sh*t goes wrong its someone else's fault.
