Warsaw - Polish police have seized more than 1 million euros in counterfeit bills near Warsaw in the biggest bust of its kind in the country's history, police said Thursday.

A 65-year-old man was arrested and faces up to 25 years in prison for production of counterfeit money and documents.

Police also seized equipment used to print fake bank notes and fake documents such as passports, in what was the largest factory of its type uncovered by police this year in Europe, police said.

Europol has been informed of the bust to determine if and where the counterfeit money had been used outside Poland, police said.

Police said the factory might have been preparing to get the currency out in time for the Euro 2012 football championships, which Poland is co-hosting with Ukraine.

Poland has not yet adopted the euro, but thousands of fans were expected for the games from abroad who could use the currency.
