Poll: Senate leader less popular in own state

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's popularity in his home state of Nevada sank to an all-time low that mirrors dissatisfaction nationwide with the Democrat-led Congress, polls show.

Mr. Reid, a Democrat, is viewed favorably by 32 percent of Nevada voters and unfavorably by 51 percent, according to a recent poll that Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. conducted for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

His favorable rating fell 14 percentage points from 46 percent in a May survey and marked the first time the newspaper's poll showed more than 50 percent of voters had a negative view of Mr. Reid.

"Review-Journal polls have a history of being very, very screwed up," Mr. Reid said yesterday, adding that his own poll in August showed opposite results.

Larry Harris, a principal at the Washington-based firm that did the poll, said the senator's low rating followed national trends for Congress.

"We don't have an ax to grind," Mr. Harris said. "When we polled his [2004] election, we said he was going to win and he did."

Mr. Reid, who got 61 percent of the vote in 2004, jogged sharply to the left since Democrats won majorities in Congress and he took the Senate helm in January — spearheading challenges to President Bush's war policy but repeatedly failing to force a U.S. pullout from Iraq.

There is no way Reid has a 32% support level after all of this.

Rasmussen put his favorable ratings down at only 19% back in June!
