Princeton study urges creation of immigration office
Princeton study urges creation of immigration officeAugust 20, 2008
TRENTON, N.J. - A new report by Princeton University looks at the challenges immigrants face adjusting to life in New Jersey.
The study shows varying success rates among school-age education and adult literacy programs around the state.
It also examines the affects of demographic shifts on municipalities that have absorbed large numbers of unskilled migrants in recent years.
And while more than a quarter of New Jersey's children are either foreign-born or have foreign-born parents, the programs to assist them have uneven track records.
The report recommends creating a state Office of Immigrant Affairs, a move being considered by Gov. Jon Corzine's panel on immigrant policy.
