Principals Discuss Rumored Attack On Cinco De Mayo
Skyline High School Hasn't Made Decision To Cancel School

    POSTED: 1:52 pm MDT April 25, 2006
    UPDATED: 3:31 pm MDT April 25, 2006

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Growing rumors about a Columbine-style attack at Skyline High School on May 5 have prompted top officials throughout the school district to meet and discuss how to act and what to do about the threat and other related rumors and concerns.

A spokeswoman with the St. Vrain Valley School District said school officials met throughout the day Tuesday. The district said it wants to send a message to parents and students that it's safe to come to school.

A posting on the MySpace Web site talks about a planned attack on May 5, which is Cinco de Mayo, the day when Mexicans celebrate a military victory over the French.

According to a police report, the post said, "So, for all you people that go to Skyline, please save your lives and don't go to school on May 5th, aka Cinco de Mayo. I already know that I'm not! Repost this if you wanna keep your life safe and anyone else's lives safe!"

A report was filed with Longmont police, but the case was closed because "no crime" has been substantiated, according to the Longmont Daily-Times Call.

A growing number of reports about violence surfaced last week and kept hundreds of students at Skyline, Niwot and Longmont high schools from going to school Friday. Rumors about an attack, planned in retaliation for a recent, fatal gang-related stabbing kept half of the student bodies at Niwot and Skyline high schools at home. At Longmont High School, a third of the students were absent.

Students said that the Cinco de Mayo rumor may have been circulating because of recent immigration tensions at the school and they believed that the principal may be canceling school and holding a teacher planning day.

Skyline principal Tom Stumpf has not yet decided how the school will respond.

Still, the situation has escalated to the point that he and other district principals are meeting to discuss possible options, but they haven't come up with a decision.

St. Vrain superintendent Randy Zila encouraged parents, students and community members to call the school district with any information that could be helpful to police and said that the schools are investigating and checking out every rumor to determine credibility.

Police had followed up on many of the rumors circulating last week, but because most of them were vague, it made it hard to follow any leads. Police remain on high alert because of two gang-related incidents in the past month that left one man dead and another seriously injured.

Seems the threat has some connection to this gang fight.

    Longmont Confronts Gang Violence
    Community Meeting Planned Tonight

    POSTED: 4:49 am MDT April 20, 2006

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Longmont officials planned a community meeting on gang violence Thursday night after a brutal killing linked to a gang.

On Saturday a teenager was killed by a group wielding bats and a large samurai sword.

The killing happened three days after police said alleged gang member Luis Guzman, 17, shot Rodolfo Moreno Jr., 25. Guzman under investigated for second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.

The violence has roiled the normally quiet city of 81,000 about 25 miles north of Denver.

Investigators said seven men were responsible for the fatal attack on Martin Garcia 17. Police said at least one suspect belonged to a gang and Garcia may have had ties to a rival gang.

But Garcia's friends and family said he wasn't a gang member. Garcia's wife, Martha, said he loved to play with their son and wanted to open his own auto body shop.

Adam Le Mizones, 21, is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder and assault and Oscar Lozano, 17, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault in the attack on Garcia. Two other suspects were also arrested, but they were not identified.

Investigators have identified several other suspects but they haven't been arrested.

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Longmont police are investigating the stabbing death of a 17-year-old male in the 200 block of 21st Avenue.

Police were called to the scene just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was confronted and assaulted by a group of Hispanic males on the street as he got out of his car.

Four Arrested In Fatal Longmont Gang Attack
Police Say Suspects Are Norteno Gang Members

    POSTED: 4:56 am MDT April 18, 2006

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Four people are now were behind bars in connection with a fatal gang attack on Longmont teenager.

Police said that a group of people jumped Martin Garcia, 17, Saturday evening. During the assault by multiple assailants, the victim was hit with baseball bats and other club-type instruments and then stabbed in the abdomen with a large knife or sword, according to police.

Police said the assault was gang-related and was carried out by members of the Longmont Nortenos.

Late Monday, police announced the arrest of Adam Mizones and Oscar Lozano. Mizones was held for investigation of second-degree murder and first-degree assault. Lozano was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault.

Then on Tuesday evening, police also arrested two additional suspects. Two brothers -- 18-year-old Joseph Rodriguez, Jr. and 20-year-old David Rodriguez -- are facing charges of conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Police said that Mizones was carrying a large samurai sword when he was arrested and that both Rodriguez brothers are Norteno gang members.

Police said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

The attack occurred in the 200 block of 21st Avenue in north central Longmont. It has so shocked the neighborhood that city officials are calling a community meeting on gang violence Thursday evening.

Investigators say the victim was just getting out of his car and crossing the street to a friend's home when he was attacked by a group of seven Hispanic males in their early 20s or late teens.

Garcia's slaying came three days after a man was wounded in an apparently unrelated gang shooting in Longmont.

Police said Garcia was married and had an infant son but he may have had ties to a rival gang. Police Commander Craig Earhart said Garcia's family said he was trying to distance himself from gang activity. His family and friends said he was not a gang member.

    There goes the neighborhood!

I pity the people who have to live there. This land is going to hell in a handbasket fast and it's very disconcerting and downright depressing.
