Universities Looking to Federal Gov't for Funds

Public university presidents are meeting this month to talk about a new source of money to keep their campuses going.

The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities is holding five meetings nationwide to discuss ways to replace dwindling state support with more dollars from the federal government.

University of Washington President Mark Emmert said Friday that it will take a collection of solutions to maintain the quality of higher education.

Emmert says it's not just a state concern. He believes the nation would suffer if state governments give up on public higher education.

The five regional meetings are being held in Texas, Washington state, Georgia, Wisconsin and New Jersey.
