Kidnapped in suburbs, freed in Texas
    (http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/4876 ... 28.article)

An owner of a north suburban restaurant is back home after he told police he was abducted, bound and driven through several states and then left, largely unharmed, in Laredo, Texas.

David Clark, 33, owner of McCarthy's Restaurant, told police he left his Vernon Hills restaurant after 9 p.m. Monday. He said he stopped at a gas station -- Laredo police said Clark didn't say which one -- before noticing a problem with his brakes. He pulled over a short time later near Illinois 60 and U.S. 45 in Mundelein.

Then, he told police, a Hispanic male pulled a gun on him and forced him back into his Jeep and told him to drive. He drove through two toll booths, Laredo police said, then the gunman had him pick up an acquaintance. The two men then bound and gagged Clark with duct tape and put him in the back of the Jeep on his side.

He could not see and did not know where he was going. He told police he was given no food and very little water, and drifted in and out of consciousness.

At 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, Clark managed to call Laredo, Texas, police from a pay phone. He said he managed to break free after he was left alone in the Jeep. The men apparently abandoned the Jeep and Clark in a strip mall parking lot, Laredo police officer Joe Baeza said.

Clark told police the men took $1,000 in cash, his wallet, a laptop and a cell phone.
Police have impounded the Jeep and are processing it for fingerprints and other evidence. Some duct tape was found in the car, Baeza said.

Clark was treated for dehydration at a local hospital. He flew back home Wednesday night, said Steve Crane, co-owner of McCarthy's.

"He's relieved he's alive," said Crane. Clark is married with two children.

No witnesses to any of the events have come forward, police said. The FBI is also involved in the investigation.
