I wonder why the Secret Service is involved in a case of identity theft?

New Orleans man arrested in identity theft scam
Posted by Jeff Adelson, The Times-Picayune May 14, 2008 12:18PM
The U.S. Secret Service has joined the investigation of a New Orleans man who allegedly used dozens of fabricated credit cards containing information on consumers from several states to buy thousands of dollars in electronics and gift cards before being busted by Slidell Police earlier this month.
Quentin T. Hall
Quentin T. Hall, 22. 7515 Lacombe St., New Orleans, was booked into St. Tammany Parish Jail in Covington on May 2 after one of several credit cards he used to buy gift cards at the Wal-Mart on Natchez Drive in Slidell showed up as "compromised," Slidell Police Chief Freddy Drennan said Wednesday.
The Secret Service, which investigates credit card fraud cases, has considered Hall a "person of interest," said Darin Lake, assistant to the special agent in charge of the Secret Service's New Orleans field office.
Hall allegedly used credit cards with his name on the front but containing information from other people's accounts in their magnetic strip. It is unclear whether he made the cards himself or worked with others to gather information and manufacture the cards, Lake said.
After Wal-Mart officials were notified about the card by an unidentified identity theft protection company, they discovered the card had been used to purchase seven $200 gift cards, Drennan said.
Hall returned to the store later in the day and purchased a laptop computer using a combination of credit cards, before being met at his vehicle by patrol officers, Drennan said. Officers found more than 30 more credit cards in the vehicle in addition to about $10,000 worth of electronic equipment, including flat screen TVs and computers, in Hall's car, Drennan said.
Hall was released on a $10,000 bond on May 7.
