Paul to hold town hall meeting in Hebron

HEBRON - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul will hold a town hall meeting in Hebron Saturday to discuss the federal deficit and health care reform.

The Bowling Green eye surgeon faces Secretary of State Trey Grayson of Boone County and Western Kentucky businessman Bill Johnson in the GOP primary for Sen. Jim Bunning's seat.

At the town hall meeting, Paul will try to make his case for a free-market approach to health care reform, said campaign manager David Adams. Paul believes less government intervention, not more, is needed to fix the health-care system, Adams said.

It will also be a chance to raise some cash: a breakfast is planned for campaign donors, and a luncheon fundraiser will follow the town hall meeting.

"Northern Kentucky obviously plays a key role for any Republican running statewide," Adams said.

Paul has made campaign stops in Northern Kentucky at least once a month since he announced his candidacy.

Local Republicans say he has support among influential conservatives in the area.

Town hall hosts include former Boone County state representatives Paul Marcotte and Charlie Walton, developers Matth, John and Bill Toebben, John and Marty Griffin of Griffin Industries, and Jim and John Brueggemann of Bavarian Trucking.

Co-host Bernie Kunkel of Walton is helping organize the event, with attorney and blogger Marcus Carey of Owen County.

"I think Rand's message of limited government and his opposition to the bailouts has helped him (in Northern Kentucky)," Kunkel said.

Carey, former Republican Party of Kentucky vice chairman, said he remains undecided in the race. He said he doesn't plan to cut Paul any slack as moderator of the town hall.

"My goal is to see to it that as many people as possible get their questions answered - and that the politician answers the questions," he said.

He will take questions during the event via a live online chat, and the town hall will be broadcast live on his Web site, conceivedinliberty.org/home/productions/live/.

The town hall begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott, 2395 Progress Drive, Hebron.
