California will get $7.39 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to bolster law enforcement efforts along the U.S. and Mexico border, it was announced today.

The money was part of $30 million in new Operation Stonegarden grants for Southwestern states announced today by DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano during a speech in El Paso, Texas.

A previous round of Operation Stonegarden grants, totaling $60 million, was announced by Napolitano in June.

Napolitano also said the DHS was changing the way it awards Operation Stonegarden grants by using a risk-based formula, which directs more of the money to key areas along the Southwest border.

The grants will be used for law enforcement personnel, overtime, travel and other costs to bolster the presence along the Southwest border, according to the DHS.
