SAN DIEGO (AP) - The 19-year-old son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez was arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of a college student who was stabbed during a fight in October, authorities said.
After a two-month investigation, Esteban Nunez and three of his friends were arrested Tuesday in the Sacramento area, authorities said. He and friends Ryan Jett, Leshanor Thomas and Rafael Garcia, who are also 19, face charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, San Diego Police Capt. Jim Collins said.
Police allege that the four men got into a fight with the victim, Luis Santos, 22, and four of his friends on Oct. 4 as they left a party near San Diego State University.
Three young men were stabbed and Santos, a student at San Diego Mesa College, died at the scene.
Fabian Nunez, 41, was elected to the Assembly in 2002 and became speaker in 2004. Earlier this year, he and other Democrats pushed a ballot measure that would have revised the state's term limits law and let some incumbents run again. Because that measure failed, Nunez was unable to run for another term last month.
Fellow Democrat Karen Bass was sworn in as the new speaker in May.
During his time as speaker, Nunez cultivated a close relationship with Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that resulted in landmark changes in laws related to global warming and labor.
The four suspects were scheduled to be taken from Sacramento to San Diego on Wednesday. Steve Maviglio, spokesman for Fabian Nunez, said the former speaker would travel to San Diego to be with his son but would have nothing to say Tuesday night.
"He's home with his family and has no comment," Maviglio said.
Arrest warrants for the four men were issued Monday.
"I'm glad they arrested the people involved in my son's murder," Santos' father Fred Santos, who lives in Concord, told the Union-Tribune. "Who these people are, who their parents are, doesn't make the pain less or more. It changes nothing. Nothing can bring my son back."
Esteban Nunez and at least one of the other suspects are college students in the Sacramento area, and had gone to San Diego "to visit friends and party," Collins said. A female witness came forward after the fight and provided information that helped police trace the suspects, Collins said.

Possible gang link probed in arrest of Nuñez's son
Police do not elaborate on the case involving a fatal stabbing in San Diego. The former Assembly speaker's son, 19, is one of four suspects in the crime, which occurred after a party in October.

Reporting from San Diego -- San Diego police are investigating whether Esteban Armando Nuñez, the 19-year-old son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez, and three other suspects in the fatal stabbing death of a college student had any ties to gangs.
"There's a possibility it could be gang-related," said Police Capt. Jim Collins, the head of the city's homicide division. Collins discussed the crime at a news conference this morning, but declined to elaborate on any possible gang connections.
Collins said the four suspects attacked five other young men when they confronted them on the street in the early hours of Oct. 4 near San Diego State University. The two groups had been attending separate parties and did not know each other, Collins said.
Luis Santos, 22, died at the scene of stab wounds; three of his four companions were also stabbed. The charges filed in San Diego County Superior Court allege that all four suspects used knives during the attack.
Nuñez was arrested without incident in Sacramento County on Tuesday. All four suspects are being brought to San Diego, where they will be arraigned Thursday. Each faces one count of murder and three of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the district attorney's office. All have known since early October that they were being investigated.
Collins said the fatal incident involved the four suspects' confronting the four victims on the street and hurling insults. Two suspects have friends or relatives in San Diego, Collins said.
Within hours of Santos' death, Collins said, police had information that led them to the four suspects. Detectives served search warrants on their homes in Sacramento. Collins declined to explain the two-month gap between serving the warrants and the arrests.
Collins said Nuñez, a student at Cal State L.A., received no special treatment because of the prominence of his father. "We'll treat him as any other suspects," Collins told reporters.
"This is a very difficult and painful experience for every family involved," Fabian Nuñez said in a statement today. "Maria and I love our children very much. We are confident our son Esteban will be cleared of the charges he is facing. We will continue to fully cooperate with all law enforcement officials and have faith in our system of justice. We ask that the media respect our family's privacy as the process moves forward."
Fabian Nuñez served six years in the Assembly, including four as speaker. He is now a partner with Mercury Public Affairs, a public relations firm in Sacramento.
Arrested with Esteban Nuñez were Ryan Jett, 22; Rafael Garcia, 19; and Leshanor Thomas, 19.
Santos was a student at Mesa College.
Police in Elk Grove, a suburban community south of Sacramento, assisted San Diego officers in arresting Thomas. "There was no incident when he was taken into custody," said Elk Grove Officer Christopher Trim.
The four are also charged with felony vandalism for an incident earlier in the same night of partying, according to the district attorney's office.

Nunez used a charity to funnel donations

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez used a small charity as a conduit to funnel almost $300,000 from companies and organizations with business in the Capitol to events that helped him politically.
By giving to the charity, the donors whom Nunez solicited earned tax deductions for which they would not have qualified had they given directly to Nunez’s campaign accounts. They were also able to donate more than the $7,200 maximum allowed under California’s campaign fundraising rules.
Those donors include Zenith Insurance Co., AT&T, Verizon Communications Inc., the California Hospital Assn., the state prison guards union, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and Blue Cross of California – all groups with high stakes in legislation.
The money was used for events including “Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez’s Toy Drive,â€
