It brings Mexican tourists into San Diego
Aeromexico starts nonstop service today between Lindbergh Field and Mexico City.

The Mexican airline had been offering seasonal service that departed from San Diego in the evening, but now it is instituting regularly scheduled flights four days a week to and from the Mexican capital.

Aeromexico offers numerous flights to Mexico City from Tijuana. The new San Diego-Mexico City route is an attempt to broaden its services aimed at tourists and business clients from Southern California and the Mexican interior.
“We're giving premium schedules, which is what people have been asking for,” said Luis Eternod, Aeromexico's manager in San Diego.

Departures from San Diego will be at 8:20 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, arriving at 1:35 p.m. Mexico City time after the flight of three hours and 15 minutes.

Flights will leave Mexico City at 5:10 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, landing in San Diego at 6:50 p.m.

“It brings Mexican tourists into San Diego, and it takes tourists from San Diego to Mexico to South America or even Europe,” Eternod said. “There are excellent connections from Mexico City.”

“We think it's fantastic,” said Salvatore Giametta, vice president of public affairs for the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Obviously any new avenue to bring visitors into San Diego we welcome,” he said. “Mexico, like Canada, is an important market for us.”

All planes used for the San Diego-Mexico City route will be new Boeing 737-700s, which offer passengers individual viewing screens and computer plug-ins, Eternod said. The planes hold 124 passengers, with 12 seats in business class and 112 in economy class.

The lowest-priced round-trip ticket is $350 plus taxes and a fuel charge, he said. Expedia's travel Web site listed the round-trip fare at $456.

Aeromexico, the commercial name of privately owned Aerovías de Mexico, also has a daily 9 a.m. flight from Lindbergh Field to Cabo San Lucas that continues on to Mexico City.

The airline has also increased its presence in the cross-border region, introducing service in late November from Tijuana to Tokyo on a Boeing 777.
