Rep. Culberson,Disapproval of a Totalization Agreement
Rep. Culberson Seeks Cosponsors for a Resolution Expressing Disapproval of a Totalization Agreement between the United States and Mexico
Washington, Apr 20 - Since 1978, the U.S. has entered into 20 totalization agreements with other countries, which allow the U.S. Social Security program to coordinate with comparable programs in other countries. On June 29, 2004, the Social Security Administration signed a totalization agreement with Mexico. The agreement is now being reviewed by the State Department and the White House. Once approved, Congress will have 60 days to vote for or against the agreement. If Congress does not act within 60 days, the agreement will automatically become law. Because Mexicans represent a large share of non-citizens in the U.S., this immeasurable cost could place an unbearable strain on our Social Security system.
