Report: Chrysler Going to Mexico to Build Fiat 500

NEW YORK -- A published report says Chrysler Group LLC is planning to build the Fiat 500 small car at a plant in Mexico.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the automaker could also build an engine for the 500 at a Chrysler plant in Trenton, Mich., and is weighing building another compact car similar to the 500 in the U.S.

A Chrysler spokesman declined to comment on the report, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

Fiat purchased a stake in Chrysler earlier this year as part of the Auburn Hills, Mich., automaker's exit from bankruptcy protection. The company has said it would introduce Fiat vehicles in the U.S. in the coming years, including the sporty 500, which has been a big seller for Fiat in Italy.
