Roberto Orduña Cruz, a retired Mexican army major, was named Juárez's new public safety secretary Monday following the resignation of Guillermo Prieto Quintana.
Orduña Cruz had a long career in the Mexican military, including being an assistant chief in the military judicial police and other law enforcement posts.
The public safety secretary oversees the city police force and will be tasked with helping curb a wave of drug-related violence behind this year's more than 300 homicides, including a dozen during the weekend.
"Those who thought the municipal police had been defeated and that we had caved in against the cowardly attacks by organized crime, today we are here in front of society to tell them they were wrong," Juárez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz said in a speech announcing the appointment of Orduña Cruz.
The violence in Juárez is part of a war between drug traffickers and government forces.
There is no way i would take that job ........
