'Right-Wing Extremism' Report Released Despite Civil Rights Concerns
    By Mark Impomeni

Filed Under:eDemocrats, Republicans, Barack Obama, Obama Administration

The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Homeland Security raised concerns about the language of a controversial report on alleged "right-wing extremist" groups before the report's release, but the Obama Administration decided to make the report public before those concerns were fully addressed, according to a Department spokesperson. Amy Kudwa declined to say which parts of the report were the source of concern inside the Department. But Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said that she would rewrite a footnote in the report that defined "right-wing extremists" as motivated by hate, rejection of federal government authority, and opposition to single issues "like abortion and immigration."

The report alleged, without specifying any evidence, that recruitment among right-wing groups was on the rise. The reasons cited for the increase included the continuing economic downturn, the election of Barack Obama as the first black president, and the return of possibly disgruntled war veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Republicans blasted the Department over that characterization of American soldiers, demanding an apology from Secretary Napolitano, which she subsequently provided. And some Democrats have joined in criticizing the Department for the report. Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson said that the report "blurs the line" between Constitutionally protected beliefs and unlawful actions.

The apparent early release of the report brings the decision making process at DHS into question. At a minimum, Secretary Napolitano needs to answer questions about who decided to issue the report to law enforcement agencies, and why. The White House should also answer what, if anything, it knew about the report before its release, and whether White House staff was involved in the decision to prematurely release it.

There has been a lot of complaints about this report of, "right-wing extremist".

It is a very valid fact is it not?

We have a government that is against the rule of law in regards to the hiring and the invasion of illegal aliens. They have weird ideas on economic fundamentals.

Nearly every policeman and government official has gone against their oaths of office and the rule of law.

They are felons and eventually people are going to go french or Mcveigh on them. It is only common sense they should be concerned and on the look out.

Maybe they should do something about the aiding and abetting. Maybe we should get some interior enforcement or at least some response to our calls for help. Just watching the border is kind of a joke at this point.
