WASHINGTON - The U.S. apparel and textile sectors lost a combined 1,001,100 jobs, or 65 percent of their work forces, since the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement in January 1994, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released yesterday.

The sectors lost a combined 4,700 jobs last month, the bureau reported.

North Carolina accounts for the most apparel- and textile-job losses in the NAFTA era at 193,000. South Carolina is second with 90,211 jobs, followed by New York at 80,550, Georgia at 77,355 and Alabama at 60,800.

According to the bureau, the apparel industry has lost 640,500 jobs, or 75 percent of its pre-NAFTA work force. The textile industry has lost 360,600 jobs, or 52 percent of its pre-NAFTA work force.

The sectors still have a combined 547,800 employees.
