Another Obama Nominee, Another Tax Problem

ADVERTISEMENTA quick trip around Hannity's America...

    Here We Go Again…

Another Obama nominee, another tax problem. It appears you have to be a tax cheat to get an appointment in this administration.

The latest case of tax delinquency is Ron Kirk, Obama's pick for U.S. trade representative. It seems Mr. Kirk, a former Dallas mayor, owes some $10,000 in back taxes for speaking fees he received which he failed to report as income. And oh yeah, for those season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks!

Mr. Kirk's nomination comes on the heels of, count them: tax cheat Timothy Geithner's nomination as treasury secretary, tax cheat Tom Daschle's nomination as head of Health and Human Services and tax cheat Nancy Killefer's nomination as chief performance officer.

A White House spokesman said the Kirk nomination was right on track, but that Mr. Kirk was just working to clear up "a few minor issues." Sound familiar?

    Dictator's Darling

Ron Kirk isn't the only Obama appointee raising eyebrows. Charles "Chas" Freeman, the new head of the National Intelligence Council, is also proving problematic.

James Kirchick at Politico.com reports that Mr. Freeman seems to have a soft spot for dictatorships, especially Chinese communists. Freeman went so far as to praise the brutal Chinese crackdown at Tiananmen Square where the Chinese government crushed a pro-democracy demonstration in 1989. According to Mr. Freeman, the Chinese government's actions were "overly cautious" and the student protesters should have expected such a response!

That overly cautious response, by the way, resulted in 2,600 deaths according to the Chinese Red Cross — that is, before it was forced to retract that figure under pressure from the Chinese government. The official Chinese government figure is 241 dead, 7,000 wounded.

    Stimulating Talk

President Obama addressed the Department of Transportation Tuesday and told the crowd assembled there how careful his administration is with your money. For that outrageous statement, he's getting our Liberal Translation treatment:

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Now we have another responsibility. Having inherited a trillion dollar deficit that we're working to cut in half.

LIBERAL TRANSLATION: Did I say cut in half? I meant double.

OBAMA: We also need to ensure that tax dollars aren't wasted on projects that don't deliver results.

LIBERAL TRANSLATION: Catfish genome research is a winner, I can just feel it!

OBAMA: And that's why as part of his duty, Joe will keep an eye on how precious tax dollars are being spent.

LIBERAL TRANSLATION: Believe me, all my advisers know just how valuable tax dollars are. Just ask Geithner, Daschle, Killefer and Ron Kirk!

OBAMA: To you he's Mr. Vice President, but around the White House we call him the sheriff because if you're misusing taxpayer money, you'll have to answer to him.

LIBERAL TRANSLATION: He said he'd only go along with it if I gave him a "cool" nickname.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

Mr. President, if you're going to propose the biggest budget in American history right after writing the biggest spending bill in American history, do us a favor and don't try to tell us how careful you are with the people's money.

    Free as a Bird

The recession is having disastrous effects on border enforcement. The L.A. Times reports that the state of California will no longer lock up illegal immigrants with prior criminal convictions who reenter the country after being deported. The reason? The state can't afford to!

Until now, these illegal immigrants remained on parole after being deported and were thrown back in jail for jumping the border again. Well, those days are long gone. In a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, the secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said, "These short prison stints are not punishment enough for these repeat offenders, yet they cost California millions every year to recycle them through our parole process." He concluded, "California can no longer afford this practice."

Unfortunately, I don't think the secretary can expect much sympathy from Ms. Napolitano who, as we reported Monday, denies that there's any crime at all spilling over the border!
