Romney denounces pastor slated to speak at US embassy in Jerusalem

Romney denounces pastor slated to speak at US embassy in Jerusalem

By Brandon Conradis - 05/13/18 10:50 PM EDT

Senate candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) on Sunday night denounced the pastor expected to speak at Monday's ceremony celebrating the opening of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

"Robert Jeffress says 'you can’t be saved by being a Jew,' and 'Mormonism is a heresy from the pit of hell.' He’s said the same about Islam. Such a religious bigot should not be giving the prayer that opens the United States Embassy in Jerusalem," Romney tweeted.

Robert Jeffress says “you can’t be saved by being a Jew,“ and “Mormonism is a heresy from the pit of hell.” He’s said the same about Islam. Such a religious bigot should not be giving the prayer that opens the United States Embassy in Jerusalem.

    9:42 PM - May 13, 2018

Jeffress, a Dallas-based pastor and known supporter of President Trump, said over the weekend that he would be leading the prayer at the dedication of the new embassy. Trump announced in December that he was relocating the embassy to Jerusalem, a move that drew international condemnation and sparked concerns of a widening conflict in the Middle East.

According to a report from Haaretz, Jeffress has made derogatory remarks about Islam in the past, calling it "a religion that promotes pedophilia" and a "heresy from the pit of hell."

He has also called Mormonism "a cult" that is not a true part of Christianity and said "you can't be saved by being a Jew," Haaretz reported.

Jeffress endorsed Romney, who is Mormon, for president back in 2012, despite derogatory comments the pastor made at the time about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The pastor has repeatedly defended Trump in the midst of numerous controversies, including allegations that the president had an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

“Evangelicals know they’re not compromising their beliefs in order to support this great president,” he told Fox News in March. “And let’s be clear, evangelicals still believe in the commandment ‘thou shalt not have sex with a porn star.’”

“However, whether this president violated that commandment or not is totally irrelevant to our support of him,” he said.

The U.S. delegation, which includes White House senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, arrived in Israel this weekend ahead of the embassy opening. Celebrations began in Jerusalem on Sunday, though, according to Reuters, numerous foreign envoys invited to participate declined to attend.

There's not anything now that Romney won't try to spoil to bring attention to himself, not even something as important as the opening ceremony of the long awaited US Embassy in Jerusalem.

I have seen the things Robert Jeffress says and I agree. It's almost like inviting David Dukes.

LOL!! People's outrage is funny. It's like they don't understand Christianity. Christians believe that unless you've been saved and believe in Jesus Christ as the son of God, then you will not go to Heaven, but to Hell. I have for example, concluded years ago that the Muslim religion is Muslimism, a political cult, not a religious belief. Mormons believe and teach that this con artist (who was run out of Missouri), Joseph Smith, is a prophet, and his cult for years and years promoted multiple wives (polygamy) and marrying little girls off to old men (pedophilia).

Robert Jeffries has one of the largest conventional mainstream Southern Baptist Convention-approved First Baptist Churches in the country that seats 3,000 in Dallas, Texas. There was nothing wrong with choosing Pastor Jeffries to give a prayer at the Embassy dedication, nothing at all.

People say all types of things in one venue and one context that when taken out of venue and context are mis-characterized, especially pastors and religious leaders, it's why for the most part their churches are closed to the public.

Maybe Romney should retweet what he said about Trump after Trump won the election, something that really matters in the political venue.

So number makes you right? Islam must be right then.

I feel they are all cults. If you believe there is a god, a heaven, and hell, and this god controls all the earth, why are there so many different religions?

Jeffress states that his is the only true belief. Then God doesn't care about 99.9% of the rest of the human race if only those who believe what Jeffress teaches will go to heaven.

What I see is many "religious leaders" who worship money. Jeffress is no different. And they can't all be right.

I am agnostic. I see good Catholic, good Protestants, good Mormons, and good atheists. I don't believe that a god of love would send good people to hell just because they don't buy what Jeffress is selling.

Jews don't believe there is a hell which is why they don't worry too much about Christians who claim they're going there.

Yet they believe in the same god!

So Jeffress obviously is the wrong choice for those who don't believe in hell, or in Jesus being God.

It's the US Embassy, as in United States Embassy, that's OUR EMBASSY, our DEDICATION program, that is for the American People, most of whom are Christian. Jerusalem is a free religion city, that recognizes all religions, and is a Holy Place for 3 major religions, Judaism, Islam and Christianity. the only people worried about Jeffries are you, an agnostic, Romney, a Mormon and the anti-Trumpers in the corrupt media. No one else has a problem with it.

I think Romney was disappointed he wasn't in a position to be invited so wrote his tweet to bring notice to himself.
