Well, it's official: Ron Paul has launched his 2012 presidential campaign. Per the National Journal: http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics ... n-20110425 "Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, whose outspoken libertarian views and folksy style made him a cult hero during two previous presidential campaigns, will announce on Tuesday that he's going to try a third time. Sources close to Paul, who is in his 12th term in the House, said he will unveil an exploratory presidential committee, a key step in gearing up for a White House race. He will also unveil the campaign’s leadership team in Iowa, where the first votes of the presidential election will be cast in caucuses next year."

    More:

Paul, 75, ran as the Libertarian Party candidate in 1988, finishing with less than one half a percent of the vote. After more than a decade as a Republican congressman, Paul gave it another shot in the 2008 presidential election, gaining attention for being the only Republican candidate calling for the end to the war in Iraq and for his “money bombâ€

Ron Paul to Announce Another Run for President

Sound money advocates, small government advocates, Libertarians, and those affiliated with the nebulous "Tea Party" will be pleased to learn Ron Paul Launches Presidential Campaign http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics ... mostViewed

Rep.

He will also unveil the campaign’s leadership team in Iowa, where the first votes of the presidential election will be cast in caucuses next year.

This would seem to be an ideal year for Paul: Since the last election, the Republican Party has moved much closer to his view on deficit reduction, which made him an early tea party favorite. All of the party's top-tier presidential hopefuls are focusing on lowering debt, government spending, and tax rates, issues Paul has long advocated.
    Welcome Discussion of Key Issues

Ron Paul will certainly not be a favorite to win the nomination.

However, by running, Dr. Paul will influence the debate on key issues of government spending, currency, sound money, ending the Fed, military spending, US military actions, border control, and welfare.

We are all better off from an open discussion of these issues.

As a Stanch supporter of Ron Paul, i am concerned of a repeat of his last election run. Republicans will attempt to do the same thing this election cycle since Paul will not run as an independent for fear of a being a spoiler. The fact that he is 75 will also prove to be a obstacle with voters. Regardless, we need this man in office as he is the only one capable of dealing with the huge problems we have. The time for games is over, our country is at stack. Use you head people.

Ron Paul will move one step closer to a long-shot presidential bid Tuesday, when he announces the formation of an exploratory committee in Iowa.

The Texas congressman confirmed his plans Monday night on Fox News, after news reports of his plans for a late-afternoon announcement in Des Moines had circulated online hours earlier. A Paul source told POLITICO that he'll also roll out his campaign team for the first-in-the-nation caucus state Tuesday.

"I'm going to start an exploratory committee," Paul confirmed to host Sean Hannity. "That might lead to the next decision.

"It depends on what kind of reception I get on your show tonight," Paul joked. "If I get booed maybe I shouldn't do it."

Three members of the state party's central committee will co-chair Paul's campaign in Iowa, a source said.

Paul, who has a small but dedicated following, will hold a news conference at the Holiday Inn near the Des Moines Airport to make the official announcement.

He raised cash online at a massive clip during his 2008 campaign, and is expected to do much of the same this time around. Though Paul does not boast much of a familiar D.C.-based political infrastructure, his team is well-connected among various tea party and grassroots conservative organizations.

Paul's libertarian stands during the 2008 campaign have become the inspiration for much of what the new Republican majority in the House has pushed — and may have been a spark that helped ignite the tea party movement.

If he eventually enters the race, Paul will have a direct claim to the tea party mantle, especially in the absence of a fresh face that excites grassroots conservatives.

Though Paul would be a clear underdog, the automatic Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling was quick to highlight his strength with the GOP base Monday evening. Tom Jensen, who heads the polling firm, noted recent survey results that showed Paul sporting the second-best net favorability ratings in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

He took a smaller step toward a campaign recently, quietly forming a so-called "testing the waters" account that allow him to start raising money for a White House bid.
