    The Death Of Freedom

    The Death Of Freedom
    Jim Kirwan
    8-2-8

The Myth of Nero playing his lute while Ancient Rome burned to the ground in 64 A.D., may have been debunked: But the fact that the United States Congress fled the City of Washington D. C., just as this nation reached her greatest threat since its founding-is not a myth!

History will record that taking a five week paid-leave of absence at the beginning of August 2008, just at the time when Impeachment proceedings were getting underway: even though the "hearings" were held in secret sessions Â* pretty much sums up the continued failures of this congress to faithfully conduct the public's business, especially "in a time of war." (1)

With millions of people losing their homes to foreclosure, and millions more unemployed; and after seven long years of no change in energy policies that have driven oil prices from $25 to over $140 a barrel with the only change in oil policies being the continuing tax breaks for the oil companies-there is no relief in sight for struggling Americans! But the rubber-stamp congress "needed a break"!

The banks, the hedge-funds and the markets are all in disarray while layoffs and unemployment are soaring out of control-yet there has not been a consensus or even a credible idea for dealing with these massive governmental failures from any quarter! This sounds like a time to burn the midnight oil, not a time to take another paid leave in the middle of so many failures of policy, failures of leadership, and especially the failure of personal courage, now that chaos has begun to raise its ugly head!

With International War Crimes being discussed against the leaders of this nation, before the world court, while the Decider and his crew remain in total denial it seems that there is no leadership at any level in this government: and not one single word from either of the anointed ones waiting in the wings about this cowardly act of congress and the media that are both obscenely overanxious to escape the coming crises! (2)

Where are the journalistic demands for explanations; where is the rage or the outrage, now that another war is pending during yet another congressional vacation! That's right-with everyone out- of-town, who will be there to object when and if the ill-conceived moment in Iran is seized during the next five weeks-especially since there is no constitutional mandate for congress to leave town just because they can't face the things that they were sworn to deal with in a timely manner! This is cowardice in the face of reality and in an elected official that may be 'natural' but it's still unforgiveable!

The fact that the public itself doesn't seem to care what their leaders do or do not do, pretty much says it all! No nation can claim to be a global leader when it fails at everything it undertakes and then just lies about the state of the state and the world as if "our word" still means anything at all!

The shell game has been exposed, the farce has been unmasked, the treasury has no floor beneath its ridiculous gestures and there is no plan or purpose driving anything except greed and personal profit that has been extorted from the corpse of what was once a proud and sometimes powerful country.

Perhaps most of all these failures can be measured by "The Death of Freedom in America," one of the few nations on the planet that once understood that freedom comes to everyone with birth, and is not granted by the state, so therefore it cannot be regulated by the government. "Free-Speech-Zones are a blasphemy against the body politic, and a heresy against the U.S. Constitution: yet both "parties" support this obscenity as if they were part of the constitution. But then the leaders of the congress routinely vote against the various amendments in the US constitution and ignore the settled laws of this land on a daily basis-and with every day that passes without complaint from the population, those transgressions against the constitution and the people continue to deepen!

We've already embraced torture and the slaughter of any people other than our own, in Palestine, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and in a dozen other places where we have used the Decider's "License to Kill" to affect contractual changes for the sole purpose of corporate benefits. These crimes will have to be paid for in blood and treasure for decades to come! (3)

History will mark these failures of the criminal dynasty of the Bush Clan, with at least as much contempt as it has shown for demented Nero and his follies. But meanwhile, you and I will have to live in the ruins!

Energy Bill Revolt /another example of our loss of Freedom

The Energy bill Revolt…I am sure we will see more dramatic revolts in the future…the American people and those that represent us have been ignored for far too long! The revolt and the media lack of reaction to the revolt in one more example of our loss of freedom due to lack of information and inadequate public out cry.

Maybe if we ask nicely (just like the illegals were asked to do) our so-called political leaders (ALL Democrats) that left Washington for their 5 week vacation yesterday (while the Republicans stayed on) will self deport!

I am not a party person but I do see glowing evidence that the majority of Republicans are not for amnesty and don't support the illegals and the majority of Democrats support pro-Amnesty and the illegals over the American people.

It is unbelievable that the media has not drawn any attention to the fact that the lone Republicans continued to be in Washington discussing and wanting to resolve the Energy problem and ALL of the Democrats went home at Nancy Pelosi’s direction. It is more than a physical reality that all the lights and the microphone was turned off and C-Spann left the building…and the Republicans stated the case….for the American people. It seems to be symbolic in that a one party system is emerging throughout our government.

On AOL news, they said the Congress left for vacation and did not resolve the energy issue that finds us paying ever growing prices at the pump. The article never mentioned that the Republicans revolted and stayed on for hours.

And on the regular news channels the revolt was not even mentioned.

I got a letter from Senate Schumer (NY) that I will share with all of you in response to my request that he support the energy bill. I’d be curious to know what Alipac’ers think about this response.

Thank you for contacting me to express your concern about the skyrocketing price of energy. I am deeply troubled by this trend, and I am working to stop this outrageous situation. To control the cost of oil, we need to increase our oil supply, decrease oil demand, and control market speculation. I am working hard to do all of these things.

The cost of a barrel of oil is higher now than it has ever been before – and it climbs higher seemingly every day. I am worried about how families that use heating oil will stay warm this winter, and everywhere I go, middle-class families are telling me that they can no longer afford to fill their gas tanks. Despite all of the economic progress that our country has experienced in the past few decades, I worry that increasing oil prices have the potential to crush the gains that the lower and middle classes have made.

As Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, I am focusing on the market forces that are shaping this crisis. The three key components driving up the price of oil are inadequate supply, escalating demand around the world, and market speculation. Global oil supply is not going up – in many regions, it is decreasing – and at the same time, demand is growing in developing countries like China and India. This bottleneck is driving up the value of oil. Market speculation, prompted by weak U.S. currency and low interest rates, is causing investors to shift their money out of the cash and securities and into commodities, particularly oil. We need to address all of these things if we are to control the price of oil and protect American families and the economy.

I am doing several things in an effort to increase energy supply. To increase our domestic energy supply, I believe that we can drill to increase our domestic supply of oil and gas. In 2006, I voted in favor of opening the Gulf of Mexico to drill for oil and natural gas. However, many of these domestic oil supplies are not yet tapped, and they are often very far from the market. Bringing these supplies on line will be a long and expensive process. The real key to getting out of this immediate crisis is to increase production from our so-called allies which are choking off their oil production to increase their own profits. Saudi Arabia, for example, has decreased its oil production over the past several years. I have been pushing the Administration to put pressure on Saudi Arabia to increase its production. With everything that America does for the Saudis, it is unconscionable that the Administration allows them to hold us hostage at the pump.

I also joined with several of my colleagues in the Senate to pressure China to decrease its subsidy for gasoline and diesel, which were driving up the demand among Chinese drivers by insulating them from rising fuel costs. After much pressure, China has recently announced that it will be cutting back on its subsidies. I am optimistic that this might ease slightly the global market and potentially reduce the price of oil.

The effects of market speculation on oil prices are harder to quantify than supply and demand. One thing is clear, though: it would be unacceptable for speculation to make it harder for people to heat their homes, cook their food, or drive to work. That is why I was so supportive of a provision that has recently become law called the Close the Enron Loophole Act of 2008. This law will help limit speculation in the oil market by overturning an obscure provision which exempted certain energy markets from federal oversight. Under this new law, the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission—the federal watchdog for commodities exchanges—would have greater authority to rein in excessive energy speculation. I sponsored this legislation and voted for it when it came to the floor of the Senate. The President vetoed this bill, but I am happy to report that both the House of Representatives and the Senate have overridden his veto and the bill is now law. As soon as these regulations are drafted and implemented, I am hopeful that it will protect the market from fluctuations caused by speculators.

The unfortunate truth is that the United States only has 1.6% of the world’s oil reserves. We can never produce enough oil here to feed our own needs – no matter how aggressively we drill domestically. As long as America is dependent on oil, we will be dependent on foreign oil. I believe that we need to solve this oil crisis in the short term, and I am working to do just that. But our long-term solution – the one for which our children and grandchildren will thank us – is to move away from our dependence on oil. That is why in addition to everything I am doing to decrease the cost of oil, I am also working to increase our use of renewable, domestic energy sources, like wind, hydro, solar, and wave technologies.

This crisis is far too complex to be solved by a single “silver bulletâ€

I agree with everything you said here, El.
