SDPD officer, two civilians injured during arrest

NORMAL HEIGHTS -- A San Diego police officer was cut on the chin and two citizens who came to her assistance suffered minor injuries during a fight with a suspect who tried to get away following a routine stop, police said Saturday.

The attack happened in the 4200 block of 34th Street about 12:35 p.m., minutes after the officer stopped suspect Michael Anthony Gonzales for an unspecified violation while he was riding a bicycle, according to police.

The officer was conducting a warrant check on the suspect when he tried to get away, police said A scuffle began when the suspect resisted the officer's attempt to prevent him from leaving and two citizens helped subdue Gonzales, police said.

After the suspect was handcuffed, the officer noticed she was bleeding and found a knife on the ground nearby. She was transported to a hospital for treatment and was expected to need a couple of stitches. The unnamed civilians suffered minor cuts but refused transport to the hospital, police said.

Gonzales faces a series of charges, including assault with a deadly weapon.
