Saturday hits record high temp in Tucson

A record-breaking high temperature Saturday in Tucson has February feeling more like sunscreen-and-lemonade weather than mid-winter.

Saturday’s high was 88 degrees, beating the previous record set on that date in 1957 by three degrees,
said Ricardo Humphreys, a Tucson-based meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“We had a weak ridge (of high pressure) that was moving over the Eastern Pacific that made its way over Arizona last night and that was probably the main contributor to” the record-breaking heat, Humphreys said.

If the forecast holds true, Sunday’s expected 86 will be another record-setting day, surpassing the 1994 record by a degree, Humphreys said.

Traditionalists — who prefer their winters on the chilly side — can take heart. A cooling trend later in the week will drop daytime temperatures to the mid-70s.

Brrrrr!
