Schwarzenegger reduces Nunez murder sentence (PROTESTED)
Schwarzenegger reduces sentence in San Diego slaying

SAN DIEGO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday commuted the sentence of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez’s son, who was convicted in the slaying of a Mesa College student near San Diego State University in 2008.
Schwarzenegger’s move, one of his last as governor, reduces Esteban Nunez’s sentence from 16 years to seven years in prison. He called the original terms "excessive" in his commutation of sentence, dated Dec. 31. (Read the entire document here.)
The commutation comes two months after a San Diego Superior Court judge in October had rejected Esteban Nunez’s attempts at shortening the sentence.
Esteban Núñez, 21, of Sacramento pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in the Oct. 4, 2008, stabbing that killed Luis Santos. A co-defendant, Ryan Jett, pleaded guilty to similar charges.
Both were sentenced in June to the maximum term of 16 years.
“I do not discount the gravity of the offense. But given Nunez’s limited role in Santos’s death, and considering that, unlike Jett, Nunez had no criminal record prior to this offense, I believe Nune’s sentence is excessive,â€NO AMNESTY

Calif. woman who killed pimp granted clemency by Schwarzenegger
SACRAMENTO, Calif. A woman who was 16 when she ambushed and killed her former pimp in a Southern California motel room has been granted clemency by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Sara Kruzan, now 32, was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for the 1994 shooting death of George Gilbert Howard. Prosecutors said Kruzan was no longer working for Howard when she killed him.
Calling her life sentence "excessive," Schwarzenegger on Sunday commuted Kruzan's sentence to 25 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Her clemency petition cited years of abuse and psychiatric reports saying she suffered from battered women's syndrome.
Schwarzenegger leaves office on Monday.

WIS. Doyle pardons 74 people in his last two weeks in office
Posted Friday December 31, 2010 2 days, 15 hours ago
MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Outgoing Governor Jim Doyle has pardoned 74 convicted criminals in the last two weeks, bringing the total for the year to 177. That’s much more than in any of his previous seven years in office.
And Doyle’s pardons since December 15th were more than the 51 he granted in all of 2009. None of the latest pardons appear to involve prominent or politically-connected people. Their crimes ranged from fleeing police to second-degree sexual assault. Doyle was recently criticized by Republicans for the numbers of pardons he granted.
But he did not approve them all. Doyle did not act on a pardon request from the late Laurie Bembenek, the former Milwaukee police officer convicted of killing her former husband’s ex-wife in the early 1980’s. Bembenek tried for years to clear her name before she died in November. Also, the governor refused to commute a pair of 80-year prison sentences in a pair of Milwaukee robberies.
State pardons do not remove convictions – but they restore rights such as voting, gun ownership, and the ability to get state licenses.
