U.S. marshals: Nevada sweep nabbed 211 fugitives

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    12:35 p.m. June 18, 2008

LAS VEGAS – Officials say 211 fugitives were nabbed in one of the largest concentrated sweeps involving federal, state and local law forcement agencies ever conducted in Nevada.

The U.S. Marshal for Nevada, Gary Orton, said Wednesday the five-day sweep dubbed Operation Falcon 2008 exceeded expectations.

Similar operations yielded 201 arrests in 2007, 101 arrests in 2006 and 67 arrests in 2005.

Orton says 11 of those apprehended last week were wanted for sex offenses, 65 were sought on drug charges, 20 for assault and eight for robbery.

Ten were suspected gang members wanted for various felony crimes.

Orton calls the capture of fugitives an important step for closure for victims and their families.

He says marshals worked with 24 other law enforcement agencies all over the state.
