The "Last Confederate Capital" sign has been placed back in front of the Sutherlin Mansion by Danville Public Works after a restoration that only took 10 days.

The marker was erected in 1939. It commemorates the use of Sutherlin's home by Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who resided at Sutherlin's home from April 3-10, 1865.

In the house, Davis held the last full cabinet meeting of his presidency and authored his last official proclamation as president of the Confederacy.

Today, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History is located in the home, which is at 975 Main St.
