Los Alamos National Lab To Reopen Wednesday

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. -- The Los Alamos National Laboratory will re-open to employees on Wednesday after the threat from the largest wildfire in state history passed.

Laboratory Director Charles McMillan told workers in a memo that the lab escaped major damage from the Las Conchas fire. The lab and town of Los Alamos were evacuated on June 27 and residents were allowed back home on Sunday.

McMillan says every one of the 2,000 buildings on 36-square-mile campus will be checked for safety before they reopen.

Laboratory managers will begin assessing the work areas on Tuesday. Some facilities may not be fully functional because of issues related to the fire.

Only workers who are notified that they are needed before Wednesday should try to enter the lab before then.
