TN: Cleveland Utilities BIG BROTHER SMART METERS

If you are not aware of big brother smart meters, you need to get a quick education and speak out against any attempts for government to attach a smart meter to your home or business. This is back door government control of the Obama Administration to ration energy within your home and/or business. Along with General Electric and its smart appliances now coming, they will want to have control energy use within your safe haven.

Other faces involved with the plan are Al Gore, Google, John Podesta of American Center for Progress, Carol Browner, Obama's Energy Czar, and other climate change, progressive liberals and socialists.

The government and the utility companies will know your private actions and habits.

Where are the Republicans and Democrats speaking out on this invasion of privacy, talking about the security risks, not to mention the total government takeover, that carries some potential risk for one's health? Where are the voices informing the American public about appliances that will be used to control behavior and to spy for the government. After making several calls to lawmakers offices, few people are even aware of this, especially young staffers.

Will they allow you to opt out? Why not? With millions of informed Americans saying no to spies through smart meters, no to takeover of what and when we do certain things that involve energy inside our homes, they must hear us. Where are the voices, the calls, the emails to say stop.

President Obama said, "Under my plan of a Cap N Trade system, electricity would necessarily 'SKYROCKET,' even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad, because I am capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations, that will cost money, they will pass that money on to consumers."

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said.

"That's not leadership. That's not going to happen," he added.

Cleveland Utilities Selects Elster for Smart Grid Project

Tennessee Utility to Implement Elster EnergyAxis(R) Smart Grid Solution to Modernize Electricity Management

CLEVELAND, Tenn. and RALEIGH, N.C., Oct 06, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Elster /quotes/comstock/13*!elt/quotes/nls/elt (ELT 14.29, -0.01, -0.07%) announced today that Cleveland Utilities has chosen Elster's EnergyAxis(R) Smart Grid solution to more efficiently and cost-effectively deliver electric services to its customer base. Cleveland Utilities is an electric, water and wastewater utility located in Cleveland, TN.

Selected from a group of four finalists, the Elster EnergyAxis solution will form a network of 29,000 electric meters at residential and commercial and industrial locations. These Smart Meters will be deployed over the next three years, arming both Cleveland Utilities and its customers with the Smart Grid services required to more efficiently manage the delivery and consumption of electric power resources.

"Cleveland Utilities continues to invest in innovative technologies that enable us to more efficiently operate our electric system while meeting the evolving needs of our customers," said Tom Wheeler, general manager, Cleveland Utilities.

"As part of the Tennessee Valley Authority's plan for the Smart Grid, we are updating our electric grid infrastructure. Cleveland Utilities has a long and successful history with Elster, giving us the confidence to select the EnergyAxis Smart Grid solution for this exciting deployment," Wheeler added.

    Cleveland moves toward 'smart grid'

    Monday, October 04, 2010 5:57 AM

(Source: Chattanooga Times/Free Press)trackingBy Randall Higgins, Chattanooga Times Free Press, Tenn.

Oct. 04--CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Now that its "backbone" infrastructure is in place, Cleveland's next step for a smart grid system will be home and business meters that can be read remotely.

Cleveland Utilities directors last week approved a $3.4 million contract with Raleigh-based Elster EnergyAxis Advanced Metering Infrastructure to install the grid system.

Over the next three years, some of the money will be used to buy support equipment, but the meters make up the bulk of the cost, at $2.9 million.

The city utility is not committed to a lump sum payment of $3.4 million, CU Finance Manager Ken Webb said.

"We pay only as the equipment is procured," he said. "If something came up, if the economy changed again where we had to stop it, we could."

Cleveland Utilities recently finished the fiber "backbone" of the grid system, said Information Technology Manager Walt Vineyard.

That fiber system already allows electric substations to "talk" to the utility's central office, he said.

For instance, he said, an equipment failure in early September at the Burlington substation caused a power outage that led to the closure of Cleveland High School for the day. But crews knew about the outage immediately, and power was restored by rerouting to other substations in about an hour.

With the meters, the same kind of monitoring will be available at homes and businesses, officials said.

It's all part of the preparation for the Tennessee Valley Authority's switch to a new billing system, probably next year, CU General Manager Tom Wheeler said.

TVA will bill based on the time of day and season of the year when electricity is used.

The system also allows better monitoring, officials said. For instance, Engineering Manager Jimmy Isom said it will be able to tell if even a single home is still without power after a storm or other outage, even if no one is at home to call.

Cleveland has talked about partnering with EPB's smart grid in Chattanooga for other services such as cable TV. The two utilities have scheduled two meetings only to cancel them.

Now that AT&T offers cable services in Cleveland along with Charter Communications, the dynamics for a utility cable service may have changed, Wheeler said. But he said the two utilities still want to discuss the smart grid.

Elster REX2 and A3 Alpha electricity meters will provide Cleveland Utilities with an automated metering infrastructure that will collect the metering data required to reduce system demands and increase energy efficiency. The Smart Meters can be linked with controllable appliances and programmable thermostats to measure power usage for time-of-day pricing and help reduce energy consumption during peak demand. In addition, enhanced load control and personal energy monitoring capabilities will provide consumers insight into their power consumption and ways to curb usage.

Republican Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander wants a BIG BROTHER smart meter in your home. Smart Meters have the capability to monitor, ration, and control your energy use. Americans will be punished with higher rates, "time of use" rates, paying more for use during peak times. Seniors, the poor, and others will be seriously affected since they generally conserve already. Tennesseans will see those rates by 2012 according to Tennessee Valley Authority. Many other utility customers in other states will see the same. Will you be forced to shower, start dinner, wash a load of clothes, etc. after 8, 9, or 10 P.M. at night? Will you have to run appliances in the middle of the night, increasing risk for fires from unattended operation of washers, dryers, dishwashers?

TVA, Huntsville Utilities prepare for electric vehicles

    Published: Monday, November 29, 2010, 9:37 AM
    Updated: Monday, November 29, 2010, 9:43 AM

Budd McLaughlin, The Huntsville Times Budd

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- With electric cars about to hit the streets, utility companies are preparing for the surge in demand for power for battery recharging.

In fact, charging one of these vehicles - the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Volt - is about the equivalent of supplying electricity to a small house.

So, if several people on the same street switch to Leafs or Volts and you add that to the current draw on power for neighborhood transformers, you see what utility companies and agencies such as the Tennessee Valley Authority and local utilities such as Huntsville Utilities will soon face.

"We are continuing to monitor the developments of the electric vehicle market as it begins to grow in the U.S.," said Huntsville Utilities spokesman Bill Yell.

The Tennessee Valley is expected to play a major role in the vehicles' development because the region between Knoxville, Chattanooga and Nashville is a test area for the Leaf, which is made in Smyrna, just southeast of Nashville.

We have smart gas meters and smart electric meters in San Diego.

You don't have to have one, but they won't let you have any gas or electricity if you don't.

Gov confirms plans for Sky box in charge of your house

Smart meters remote-control spy boxes by 2020

    By Lewis Page

Posted in Government, 3rd December 2009 12:25 GMT

The government has announced the results of its consultation with the public and other interested parties on plans for "smart" energy meters to be installed in all British homes and businesses. The most controversial aspects of the devices - the fact that they will effectively allow remote control of a home by energy companies and/or the grid authority - have apparently passed unchallenged.

Many of the proposed capabilities of smart meters, to be universally installed by 2020, are relatively uncontroversial. The devices are to be networked back to grid authorities and supplier companies, allowing an end to visits for meter readings and much simpler billing operations for energy firms. They will also be able to join a home network, allowing separate displays elsewhere in a house and/or the monitoring of energy use on other devices such as home computers, phones etc. The machines will be run like Sky or TiVo boxes, under remote control from outside the home - users will have no control over them.

Real time power monitoring like this already rings some alarm bells - it will usually be possible, for instance, to use such data to tell if people are in or out, and perhaps other details such as what TV programmes they like to watch, how many hot drinks they consume, whether they cook with a microwave or an oven etc. Such information is significant in a privacy context, and valuable in bulk to marketing organisations.

But this pales into insignificance compared to the more radical ideas. The smart meter is also supposed to enable remote cut off or restoration of supplies - though there has been a row over the cut-off valve which would be required in the case of gas, and the government says it will have another think before deciding on that.

Apart from being able to turn a house off and on remotely, however, the unspecified people who control the "meters" from afar will also have other capabilities. Specifically, the boxes will have "load management capability to deliver demand side management - ability to remotely control electricity load for more sophisticated control of devices in the home".

"Demand management" is industry code for power rationing or cuts. "Controlling load", as the consultation says, is a matter of turning things on or off, up or down. Quite bluntly, this is not a meter - it's a remote-control device in charge of your house, and potentially of everything in it.

According to the consultation response issued yesterday:

The Government therefore confirms the proposals [as described]. The Government will take a final decision on the gas valve issue once the further assessment work is complete.

You can read full details - and further plans to make the grid itself smart - here [1]. ®

Calif regulators reject moratorium on Smart Meters

    By The Associated Press,
    Friday, December 3, 2010 at 8:35 a.m.

SAN FRANCISCO — California regulators have decided not to block Pacific Gas and Electric Co. from installing Smart Meters despite concerns about the devices' health effects.

The California Public Utilities Commission voted 4-1 on Thursday against the moratorium proposed by the advocacy group, EMF Safety Network.

The group says radiation from the wireless electricity and gas meters is harmful to people's health. It calls federal radiation standards that regulate them inadequate.

PUC President Michael Peevey told the network it should take its concerns to the federal government, not the state utilities commission.

PG&E maintains that the meters are safe. Still, other PUC commissioners said they would like to see more research on whether the meters can affect health.
