FREDONIA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities are pursuing a 23-year-old man they say shot a Utah sheriff's deputy near the Arizona-Utah border.

A Coconino County sheriff's spokeswoman says authorities were chasing Scott Curley on foot when he shot a Kane County, Utah, sheriff's deputy with a high-powered scope rifle.

Spokeswoman Valerie Ausband says the incident began around 2:20 p.m. Thursday about three miles east of Fredonia, a small town just south of the Utah border in Arizona.

Ausband says the deputy's condition is unknown and multiple agencies have responded to the shooting. She says Curley is familiar with the area and continues to fire at pursuing officers.

She describes Curley as an American Indian male, 5-feet-7-inches tall and weighing 170 pounds.
