Sign of the times: Hundreds queue for free burritos in the City

They used to be Masters of the Universe - but these days they're excited about the possibility of getting a free lunch.

A Mexican restaurant in the City of London caused a feeding frenzy when it offered complimentary burritos yesterday.

Scores of workers - many in suits and ties - waited for up to 30 minutes after Chilango on Fleet Street made the offer.

The poster's boast of 'burritos 100 per cent off' certainly had the desired effect.

One observer said: 'It was telling to see how many time-poor office workers were prepared to wait for a free meal.'

Official figures this week showed that people are buying less food for the first time in 22 years as the nation goes on the 'credit crunch diet'.

A squeeze on household budgets means that for the first time in a generation, people are cutting back on the amount of food bought on the high street.
