Spinach, Lettuce,The irradiation Rule Goes Into Effect Today

FDA to permit spinach, lettuce to be irradiated

    Friday, August 22, 2008

WASHINGTON — Consumers worried about salad safety may soon be able to buy fresh spinach and iceberg lettuce zapped with just enough radiation to kill E. coli and a few other germs.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday today will issue a regulation allowing spinach and lettuce sellers to take that extra step, a long-awaited move amid increasing outbreaks from raw produce.

It doesn’t excuse dirty produce, warned Dr. Laura Tarantino, FDA’s chief of food additive safety. Farms and processors still must follow standard rules to keep the greens as clean as possible — and consumers, too, should wash the leaves before eating.

Great! I'm glad to know that the fecal matter in my food products from Mexico will now be safer for me and all American children to eat!

    Yum!

Lou Dobbs had a segment on this yesterday, the FDA has no clue where most food really comes from. Just more spin to make us think its now safe to eat. Fields in 3rd world countries are routinely fertilized with human waste.

Heaven forbid we force Mexico to adopt and comply with stricter food-safety regulations. That would be much too costly...for them, of course.
