Police Disperse Boca-Housing Voucher Crowd

BOCA RATON (CBS4) ― Police in riot gear quietly dispersed about 400 to 500 people on Wednesday gathered outside the Boca Raton Housing Authority Office demanding affordable housing vouchers.

One person was taken into custody and about nine others hospitalized for exhaustion.

The incident began when word spread that the housing authority would be giving out 400 housing subsidy vouchers beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The problem started when would-be applicants decided to line up late Tuesday night. Officials started to pass out flyers then to alleviate the crowd, but by the time sunrise came, they had run out of applications.

This made some mother upset, because they had been told applications were to be given out at 9a.m. Wednesday.

Hundreds of people, mostly women; many pregnant or with infants or toddlers in arms, had been lining up in front of the housing authority's office on West Glades Road.

One woman was arrested.
