    Michael Steele is not now nor has he ever been in Congress. He was the Lt.Gov for Maryland and then ran for the Senate in 2006 for Maryland. He lost to a democrat. I don't think I would describe him as the the most Liberal Republican anywhere, especially in the Congress. There are some REALLY liberal republicans there. I don't know about his stance on illegal immigration. I will be happy to give him the benefit of the doubt but will stand strong against him if he is spineless on that issue.

    I just heard tonight that he's the most Liberal Republican in Congress ....
    Sorry I thought he was a Congressman.
    There are MANY results for "Michael Steele Liberal Republican" Google it!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ARTICLE
    Michael Steele is like John McCain's liberal brother...and that's
    saying a lot. Not only has he not came out strongly against abortion,
    but he says Roe V. Wade should NOT be overturned. He is for
    affirmative action. He is against gay marriage bans (I'm not for them
    either...but the point is conservative credentials, here). He is not
    opposed to Embryonic stem cell research. Indeed, in MANY areas, this
    man sounds like a Democrat, including saying that the party needs to
    reach out to different racial groups (using Democrat group mentality),
    like unions. He is associated with an organization that has blocked
    conservative actions within the party.
    I'm not opposed to Michael Steele being a Republican. Our party is
    wide, and he makes some interesting points. However, it is his
    SELECTION that gives me great concern. When the candidates for RNC
    chairman were campaigning for the spot, there was relentless attacks
    upon every conservative candidate by those within the party, and the
    leader chosen by the majority of party officials was the most leftist
    of the options (to be fair, a highly conservative one came close).
    It appears that not only did the party NOT learn from the failure of a
    liberal Republican Presidential candidate, but they want to expand
    that failed experiment to the whole party. So, this selection casts a
    REAL shadow upon the prospects of conservative Republican victories in
    the election two years from now. It is possible to have a
    conservative upswing even with a liberal party chairman, but it means
    having to go outside the party leadership to do it.
    Speaking of going outside the party leadership....one more note about
    Steele. He isn't even a MEMBER of the RNC, and they chose him as
    party leader. How sad. The party has surrendered their values FOR
    THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN and FOR THE LIBERALISM HE BRINGS. Let the truth
    be told.
