Here is the timely part of Laurie Moncrieff’s (of Schmald Tool and Die) terrific oral testimony before the U.S. - China Economic and Security Review Commission in Dearborn Michigan yesterday. Her call for companies to contact their Congressmen and urge opposition or support to specific bills now before the Congress adds an important practical – what-all-of-us-can-do-right-now dimension to her testimony.


AS we speak, Chairman Thomas of the House Ways and Means Committee is holding a meeting today with GOP Congressmen who oppose the Oman Free Trade Agreement which is scheduled for a vote on the House Floor on Thursday, July 20. Thomas is worried that the Oman bill is in trouble. If the GOP Leadership decides to put off voting for the Oman bill this week because the votes are not there, this would be the single most effective blow to the Administration’s free trade agenda that we could deliver, and probably result in killing chances for a vote on any more trade liberalization legislation before the November elections. It would also send a chilling message to the emergency WTO meetings scheduled for next week to revive the WTO’s Doha Round of tariff reduction negotiations.


So please take a minute to call your Congressman today, especially if he is a Republican, and tell him to tell the GOP Whips that he is opposed to the Oman Free Trade Agreement scheduled for a vote on Thursday, July 20.


Additions from Laurie Moncrieff’s Oral presentation:


In the short term constituents need to urge their Congressman to support HR 1498, which would allow us to bring trade cases against countries like China that manipulate currency. We need to discourage support of the Oman, South Korea (who incidentally wants to bring in some North Korean companies in the agreement), and Peru trade agreements until we are ready to enforce the current trade agreements. We also need to insist that Permanent Most-Favored nation Treatment not be granted to Vietnam.
