Study envisions the Valley in 2050, with 10-million people

Ten-million people could live in the Valley by 2050. Where will they all live and work?
Don Keuth of the Phoenix Community Alliance said the group has developed three potential plans for growth.
``A compact mixed-use scenario where we try to create higher levels of density, one that's more multiple town centers and then one that we kind of talk about as a poly-centric or village-style."
Keys include preserving some open space and convenience for all those people, Keuth said.
``I think by-and-large people look to hav a little higher density so that you can be more compact and create an environment so that people can live near where they work."
Most of the growth in the next four decades is expected to be in the northern and eastern areas of the Valley.
The findings come from a three-month study conducted by 270 stakeholders in the Valley's future. Participants worked in groups of nine to allocate projected growth patterns using Legos. Besides the Phoenix Community Alliance, the Urban Land Institute, Lambda Alpha International and Valley Partnership were involved in the study.
``We're going to be spending the next 18 months looking at the next steps in terms of public education and how we begin to drill down into some of these scenarios and see what options might be out there," Keuth said. • Phoenix in 2050
