Interstate 880 in Oakland, California was shut down for hours when more than 1,000 Black Lives Matter protesters blocked the roadway.

A large group of protesters marched onto the roadway from Oakland City Hall, where they chanted “black lives matter” and clapped.

The crowd yelled on the freeway, “No justice, no peace; no racist police.”

The Black Lives Matter protest was sparked by two shooting deaths of African American males by police officers: Alton Sterling was shot in Baton Rouge, LA and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights in Minnesota.

Organizers said the protest was about larger issues of what they see as unchecked police misconduct, including the sex scandal that has engulfed the Oakland Police Department.

The protestors also left a "trail of vandalism" according to the Oakland Police Department. "The department’s headquarters were defaced with paint and scratches; windows at two businesses were smashed; and graffiti was sprayed on some local buildings, police said."

Police also reported that one person was arrested for allegedly smashing a grocery store window.
