Surprise Surprise: Healthcare Premiums Go Up Massively

Insurance premiums under the Affordable Healthcare Act are up 39% to 56% according to a new report. Across the country, families are paying an average of $663 per month and individuals are paying $274. On the extreme end, some families in California are paying more than $2,600 and more than $1,800 in New York.

These premium changes are for individual plans that do not qualify for the government subsidy. Funds from other Americans the government are available for individuals earning $45,960 per year and for families of four earning less than $94,200. A significant number of Americans, obviously, qualify for subsidies and it is expected that more than $1 trillion dollars will be provided to subsidize costs over the next ten years. To put this in perspective, median household income in America is about $51,000 per year.

The main reason for the increases is that the coverage requirements under Obamacare have been significantly increased. These include benefits such as maternity care, coverage for children through age 26, elimination of annual or lifetime limits, newborn care, requirements for coverage despite pre-existing conditions, among other things. Every policy in America must include these provisions, no matter where or by whom they are purchased.

Despite the fact that the program was sold, in part, with the assertion that costs will decrease, it is turning out to be decidedly not so. The reality of the costs of the plan, in stark contrast to the assertions by the administration, certainly brings to mind Dr. Thomas Sowell’s comment:
“It is amazing that people who think we cannot afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, and medication somehow think that we can afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, medication and a government bureaucracy to administer it.”
As for the future of healthcare premiums, they will continue to increase. Sign ups for the plan continue to be dominated by the highest-cost Americans, those who are already sick or more advanced in age, or avoided altogether (as reported by IJR yesterday). Even the Department of Health and Human Services acknowledged that costs will be going up next year, albeit at a “smaller pace.”
