MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — For many people, giving gifts is one of the major parts of the holidays.

But, a new survey says 69 percent of Americans would skip exchanging gifts if their family and friends agreed to it.

The survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of SunTrust Bank showed that 60 percent of those surveyed expressed they would spend more time with friends and family if they didn't have to worry about buying or making gifts.

25 percent of people said they would rather use gift money on activities with friends and families. 37 percent said they would pay down debt, and 47 percent would choose to save money or invest it.

Find the complete results of the survey here.

I think those 69% which would include me should start a movement to celebrate Christmas with gatherings, family outings, special edibles, visits, family purchases (something for the whole family or for the house), trips to a special restaurant, museum, theater, movies, and events.

Are Americans regaining their character and common sense? Sure sounds like it!!!

Love this survey. Makes me feel very hopeful about our country.

Christmas is for kids. Adults should not go into debt buying excessive gifts.

We only buy for those who are 18 and under...still in school.

After that no more gifts...get a job...buy what you want!

If we need something...we buy it 75% off after Christmas.

While the situation in our country is changing course and getting on the right track, our country is still in very serious trouble. It will take time to fix all our problems that impact the economy, jobs and wages. Tax cuts alone won't do it, we have to stop illegal immigration and dramatically reduce legal immigration. We have to still fix many many bad trade deals. So there is a lot still to do, so people still need to keep that in mind, that it takes time even for tax cuts to have household impact, so spend wisely and prudently, but enjoy your Christmas, the Season, the Decorations, the Music, the Movies, the Family Activities, the Food, the Gatherings, the Church, and just remember, there is no pressure other than the pressure you put on yourself, maybe time to ease up on that and instead of worrying and fretting and going into debt over gifts, relax and enjoy the real meaning of Christmas, Baby Jesus, Joy and Love.

I am in total agreement with one exception, your children and grandchildren.

I spoil the hell out of my 6 year old grandson and go crazy (way over-board) on Christmas for him.

Nothing worst than getting a gift from someone and pretending you love it!

LOL!! Oh yes, Lorrie, you're right, this is not to be construed to mean to ruin Santa Claus for the children. There must always be room for that, somehow, some way. It's all the grown ups. We would rather enjoy each other, with good food and drink and outings, gatherings and activities. At least I would and it seems vast majority of other Americans would too if everyone could come to an agreement to do that.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!
