Sweden: Representative of Malmö mosque demands that it should be visible from all directions

The Mahmood Mosque feels that Malmö City doesn’t listen to them and therefore appeals the detailed plan for the immediate area. They protest that buildings around them will be too tall and thus obscure the mosque.
Islam’s Ahmadiyya Assembly says that when they bought the land and built the mosque, it was stated in the detailed plan that future surrounding buildings would not be taller than 5 meters. And they chose the location because the mosque can be seen at a distance.
However, in September, the Urban Planning Committee compiled the new detailed plan for expansion of the area, and it states that buildings can be up to 14 meters tall.
“Visibility was one of the main reasons we chose this area for the mosque. According to the drawings we have seen, it is clear that the mosque will be obscured from almost every angle, and only from one angle, the mosque is visible from afar”, the representative of the mosque, Karem Lone, writes in his appeal.
The municipality didn’t ask us before this detailed plan was decided on. We hope that they take into account that the mosque is not only a prayer hall but also a cultural building, which is supposed to be seen from all sides, Kareem Lone says.
He also emphasises that the Mahmood Mosque is intended as a platform for multiculturalism, where representatives of different religions can meet.
